scratch all of those options and get a PS3, most reliable, great quality, Easily Upgradeable. 299.99 Everytime new technology comes out you have to buy a new blu ray player, PS3 just release a firmware update and boom now you don't have to buy a new blu ray player. In addition standalone blu ray players cant take massive firmware updates because of their processor. Remember the PS3 is meant for gaming so everything is faster, load times etc.

While I love and have 2 Sony HDTVs, I am getting excellent value out of my two Panasonic BD60s. I have no complaints at all. Of course with my setups I won't be able to handle 3DTV, but that is ok with me.

Just traded my $900 Oppo SE for a PS3 slim if that helps! Ofcourse i use a Cambridge Audio DAC with it to boost its audio quality and for my computer music. PS3 slim is the best blu-ray player hands down. When I got rid of my fat PS3 I was lost after a week and I couldn't hear or see a difference in playback quality. "did a blind test" Only on DVDs upscaled a little but who wants to see a dvd on a HD tv anymore? Now if I was old and a PS3 was too complicated to use or all my music was disk based I highly recommend the BDP-83 SE, It is a great player but it lacks all the PS3 extra abilities. I will have to get rid of my 10 sacds now but with blu-ray audio out SACD is a dead format, thats why Sony gave up on it when they won the blu-ray format war, no need for 2 types of high storage disk!

very cheap 100 dollar box store one, PS3 slim, or a Oppo SE if you run analog and have the cash! After all 3 I found the PS3 slim combined with a 400 dollar Cambridge Audio Dac Magic gave me the best results! The Dac helps alot with my huge computer music library! I'm using Anthem amps, Paradigm Studio 100s, and a Sunfire HRS 12 so Im not just comparing using Bestbuy stuff either! I wanted to hate the PS3 as well, but it really is the best, that could explain why Sony takes a loss on every player sold! What other player can claim that?

I think if you're a gamer then the PS3 (whether it be the FAT or the SLIM) is an obvious choice. It's great machine in its own right. I just had a really bad experience and have no faith in it anymore. Additionally I'm not a gamer, so to me the PS3 holds little value as I think other players have features that outshine it.

It's just too complicated for her and she doesn't know how to use a computer so she doesn't have any computer music. Video games are also too complex and she doesn't like them. Now me being in my mid 30s I have an appreciation for the new technology and forms of entertainment like gaming. Being that music, movie's, and games are only just ones and zeros stored on a disk, flash drive, or computer, I'm going to pick the machine that can do them all. The PS3 is 3D ready as well, can stream Netflix, be used to chat with my friends in Europe for free and the list goes on and on and who knows what will be added in the future. These expensive stand alone player are mostly just a waste of money, they are just readers of 1s and 0s. The real benefit comes from the Quality of DAC you use rather it be in the player, receiver, or outboard DAC. all the cheap players use cheap DACs so it doesn't matter, that's why I say get a PS3, if you need a good DAC because your receiver is cheap or you dont have a outboard DAC then you need a Oppo bdp 83 se. I work at a high end electronics store so I have seen all the snake oil. Forget what you read on paper, do a blind test and be prepared to be shocked at what you cant tell!

Nope. I was not interested in that feature when I was shopping.
I am not saying the PS3 isn't awesome. I am sure it is. I just did not and do not want one. The problem I have is that some people just don't understand that or the fact that some players do the job really well. |
