Default Spider: New here not new to Blu/HD question

Hello together,

Yeah I'm new here but not so new to blu ray and/or home theater.
I always was a silened reader here for the BD reviews. Thanks for them...

I do have a question: Since I upgraded my TV to full HD 1080p[see sig] i thought it's time for HD broadcast [Comcast HD].
The PQ is okay for 1080i but on some fast moving pictures i can see on close up objects/persones a leading white line around the edges. What can that be? And better how can i get away. Same effect on some 1080i BD material. All my gear is hooked up via HDMI 1.3 pass through my reciever.
I would like to force a 720p pulldown on 1080i material and i know the Onkyo605 is able to do that but i can't find the link how to set this. Any ideas?

/Spider

The 605 doesn't force 720p pulldown. You've mixed up multiple different terms. The 605 can upscale analog sources to 720p. This means s-video, component, composite, etc can all be upscaled and sent to the tv at 720p. It's kind of moot since your TV is going to upscale anything it gets to 1080p, and probably does it at least as good as the 605. Pulldown refers to 24p sources and 60hz refresh rate televisions.

If you're seeing a white line outlining, sounds like you have the sharpness cranked up. Try calibrating your set. If its a 120hz set, turn off any Motionflow/plus technologies and see how it looks to you. Usually "enhancements" of the set are what cause these kinds of anomalies.

You can force the Comcast box to 720p. That way you do not have to worry about the 605 configuration.

Yeah right. Got that twisted. Found the link by the way last night. But thanks for your explanation on that.

So far I'm using a sharpness of 5 for 1080p sources and DVD and 14[about half way cranked up] for all other material. Yes it's 120Hz. Motion enhancement are set to Standart[not off]. I will see if i can tweak that a little bit. By the way I like to set this to high on all animated Stuff. Cars, The Nightmare before Christmas, Final Fantasy... looks so great...

Thanks

Yeah, those settings are what's causing it. It's a matter of finding the balance that you like. Try turning it to off, and try bringing your sharpness down- try 0 for dvd/blu and 5 or so for cable. Worst that happens is that you don't like it and you set it back.

See thats the thing. I tweak for weeks to find those setting. And i think on the DVD/BD settings i won't chang anything since I don't have the problem. But will see how it looks bring the cable setting down. May have to tweak the other setting to get similar results for my taste.

Sony has designed the BRAVIA Televisions software update process to be customer friendly. This software update (version 202r) addresses issues experienced by some customers, including the following:

White dots or sparkles intermittently appear on the TV screen when displaying the menu or playing a DVD.

Problems selecting an HDMI input on a CEC device using the XMB Menu.

Problems resolving the finest detail issue of some 1080i 60hz film-based content (mentioned in a recent PC Magazine article).

Intermittent audio on HDMI Input 4.

Photo Mode issue that may occur when performing slideshow Butterfly - The same picture sometimes continually displays, and the slideshow no longer transitions through the other pictures.

XMB™ sometimes does not display.

IMPORTANT: This update (version 202r) is not necessary if you have already installed the update (version 200r).
Updated my TV and so far could not find an issue to complain. Works now even with my setting.
