Default STRDG 720 Questions

I did search these forums for a while, and did not see any of these answers.
I did purchase the 720 2 weeks ago, and its my first upgrade from a HTIB so of course the quality is like whoa! I run ps3 for audio, so my questions are is a 1.3 cable better for audio? Does it make a difference? and with my ps3 hooked up going through LPCM is there a reason to take it back for the 820 or 920? Time isnt on my side as i have 30 to take it back and upgrade. Please help because I know no better as i like what i got but am i missing anything?

The 720 and 820 are the same reciever except that the 820 internally decodes HD Audio. The 920 is a different receiver all together. Honestly after having the 710 and now the 920 the difference is huge. The 920 is in everyway better. If you can trade up, you want to the 920. I don't think a 1.3 cable is a must for LPCM, but I would get one just to have piece of mind, personally.

920 decodes all the lossless codecs internally, and it also allows tonal control (bass & treble) on all three speaker groups (fronts, center and surrounds). The 720 only allows bass & treble on front speakers only (as does the 820). 920 features binding post speaker connections for all speakers (allowing for banana clips) while 720 only has binding posts for main speakers only (center and surrounds are spring clip only). 920 features a few more watts of power per channel (110 vs. 105) at 0.1%THD. This is actually an insiginifcant improvement, however. 920 has one additional HDMI input, and 1080 upscaling for analog video inputs.

MSRP on the 920 is $599, but you can find it much cheaper online. Some places offer it for less than $400.

For me, tonal control over all three speaker groups is ESSENTIAL, and binding post connections for speakers is very important. There are probably other differences, too.

If you are going to return the 720 you can get the 920 from B&H for $399, most places do, like Rob said, have it for less than $400

THD is .09%. Biggest difference for me was the fact that the 920 is rated as a full-bandwidth (RMS) receiver and the 720 and 820 aren't. It will carry the full weight of the sound to its end without losing any of it by cutting it off early. Is the way it was explained to me.

Sound quality I noticed was vastly improved from the 710 to the 920, clarity, details we much better... whether I play the movie in DD True HD or DTS HD or LPCM. It was nice to have the GUI. Also the biggest thing was the fact that the 710/720/820 way about 17 lbs, the 920 is 24 lbs. why is that significant, Power. Bigger the power source the more power you will get.
