I am thinking of getting a PS3 as a Blu-Ray player mostly but am also looking at other Blu-Ray Players.
I know the PS3 has a 380 Watt power supply. Does it use this much wattage at most times or is it less? I know that may be for video games. Does it use less wattage for playing blu-ray. How does this compare to the wattage of standard Blu-Ray players? I know overtime this cost could add up if the PS3 is much higher. |

PS3 uses 200W max power under full load, and is around 160-180 for BD playback. The extra PSU capability is for things like external devices, charging the controllers and more stable power rails.

I wouldn't worry about power consumption comparisons. Even if it were a 100W difference in power consumption, it's 2 maybe 3 pennies more per movie watched. It's very small. You're probably not going to watch 100 movies in a year - but if you did, the movies cost you ~$2,500 to buy, and the difference in power to play them on a PS3 is ~$2.50.
