There might be a couple, but probably no more than a handful and even at that, those are gonna be out of most people's price range. As I recall, Josh posted a few that were coming out or have come out that were supposedly better than the PS3. But not many at all and very pricey.

If you talking about Just Blu-ray then Yes i find that My Yamaha Out performs For PQ and is as fast or not faster to load movies then my PS3.

I found My Samsung 1400 was the Same as My Ps3 for PQ.But The PS3 was Better for Firmware updates and load times.
There s no firmware yet for my Yamaha player and it Plays amazing, No firmware out,But need for one.YET

Hello I want to say that I'm sorry for this.

There's a whole lot of reasons why people would have both but the reasoning behind it can be idiotic.

For example :

most people find that not being able to use the universal remote on the PS3 a deal breaker. Why, who knows that reasoning is idiotic the last time I checked you could get a NYKO IR PS3 remote for less than 30 dollars.

Noise - well if you're truly enjoying you BD experience I would assume that you have a complete HT setup and that your PS3 is not louder than you 5.1 or 7.1 setup set to halfway.

Looks - that has been discussed before.

Now my fellow BD member in doing some research I have found some flaws on your BD player of choice
http://hometheater.about.com/od/blur...habds2900s.htm

a few quick ones are no SACD support, no Ethernet connection and for shame no BD live upgrade to 2.0.

The PS3 is not perfect it has many flaws but it has set some standards that all BD players should have.

WIFI how many of you cringed when you read this !!!

Fast load times

Other media support Divx, SACD to name a few.

LG-300, Panasonic BD35, Panasonic BD55, LG-200, Pioneer Elite 51, Sony 550, Samsung 2550 with all of these costing less than the PS3 (with the exception of the Elite). This is just considering BD playback and audio. There are others around the corner, or that are high-end that perform better than the ps3, but cost a lot more.

PS3 is better than an older Sony - if you are not going to play games - You owe it to yourself to try the S550, or if you are willing to go outside of Sony, any of the others I listed - especially if you have a receiver that can decode bitstreamed HD codecs - then you have a whole flock of BD players to add to the list (to include the Sony S350).

I just want to let you know and by no means i take anything personal ,The ps3 is a great gaming system that my boys use and sometimes i use myself. So right away it makes all the sense in the world,For me

I found on a lote of PS3 threads a year ago .Ps3 owners would always talk about how fast it loaded and it was true. The fastest blu-ray player. Not anymore.I love watching blu-ray like everyone eles.PQ is important to them.My Yamaha does this better,But like you said you need a whole system to take advantage of that.So my player isnt for everyone.Yeah i know what it does not have. But what its made for(Blu-ray movies Amazing)

I only can talk about The Ps3,Samsung 1400 and The Yamaha just for the simply fact thats all i ever had for players in my system so i always keep it to those 3.By no means am i holding a Yamaha Flag.

Even though i have a Yamaha Print right next to my Blu-ray Print over my system

To the OP here is a link to sound and vision magazine's Blu Ray Shootout.
http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/blu...blu-rodeo.html
They test four of the latest players with profile 2.0 and give their own recommendations. If you are looking for a standalone this may help you make a choice. I own the PS3 myself, and I love it. But I also play games as well as watch movies so it was a logical choice for me. I do understand that not everyone wants one and now they have feature packed players that are much lower in price.

If you were Asking me what the best player is then i would recommend Panasonic BD35 or the 55,your choice for your own needs(In my opinion). All around for the price and what They do.I will let you know that Denon,Yamaha and i belive its Marantz (And there could be more i dont know about) that uses Panasonic Parts And i belive they use Panasonic BDlive Chip.So right away why wouldnt i recommend panasonic if other companies are jumping ship with them (in my eyes anyways)

Very well stated! Since I don't care for video games, the PS3 wasn't the best choice for me costing twice as much as an entry level standalone. The S350 (or Panny BD 35) was the logical choice. I ended up buying the S350 on BF because it was only $178.00. The BD 35 was over $70.00 more and not worth the extra expense.

All of the ones reviewed in that S&V review are excellent BD players. I would let cost alone decide which one to get.

You're a great sport!!

I was looking at two different threads when responding to your o.p. so I know it was a bit confusing.

Anyways I am glad that so many manufactures have brought so many features to SA and brought an affordable product to the masses. I just wish they would add wifi to more of their machines.

You know i was just saying this to a friend. Blu-ray is blu-ray we can always find something a little bit better then the one we have and one a little bit less, but when it comes down to it when you take out 10 sec loads to 30 sec loads and just a little bit more sharper to the next.

Its all blu-ray and its amazing, any which way we go.

I was just lucky enough to have a budget(and a wife) that allowed me to get the player i wanted and iam vey happy.Looks nice with my reciever as well

I agree with almost all of this statement. Panasonic's players have been the best engineered and most stable of all the manufacturers. If people do not know it was actually Panasonic engineers that have had the most input on creating the Blu-ray standard.

From my own personal experience of checking BD players (particularly the newest ones from Sony and Panasonic), I have not seen any standalone BD player beat the PS3 yet in terms of disc loading times and certainly not in the area of BD Live downloading performance. Of course, that isn't everything.

The PS3 isn't perfect. It has its own little drawbacks, like not being able to bit stream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio. But it's still a great choice as a Blu-ray player for all the extra functions you get in the unit. You can stream multimedia to it from your PC, use it as a jukebox and do all sorts of other stuff with it that standalone BD players just don't do.

I like the Panasonic DMP-BD35 as a lower priced alternative to the PS3 if you don't care at all about gaming or other multimedia use. The BD55 costs as much as a PS3, but is really good if you have an expensive yet older receiver with 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 channel analog audio inputs and don't want to spring for a new receiver with Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD decoding.

I personally bought the PS3 player back in May 2008 just because at the time it supported Profile 2.0 and was able to get updates for firmware. I just used the PS3 as my dvd/blu ray player and was very happy. Two months after that I just bought a few games and played that too. Recall the issue with Iron Man on blu ray where players had a hard time reading the disc. Well PS3 had no issues because of the ability to support firmware update. So I guess if a cheap blu ray player is a concern just buy a used PS3 and enjoy. Also if you have a decent AVR like mine (Denon 1909) you will be happy on the new audio codecs

Each one has their pro's and con's but at this point with a low budget and time, I will sacrifice audio for time. PS3's have the ability to do so much more than a stand alone BRP, so right now (imho) PS3 is the way to go.

What do you mean sacrifice audio? if your talking about the ps3 not able to bitstream then no, your not sacrificing anything. LPCM does the same thing as bitstream. i dont understand why people see that as a drawback. in fact its a gain because with the player decoding you can hear the menu audio.
