Default PS3 to Marantz, no HDMI

I have a PS3 for BD player and an older Marantz amplifier with no HDMI. I am using an optical cable with the PS3 set to bitstream. I know everything is fine if the movie is Dolby Digital 5.1, but I have noticed many of the latest movies are in DTS 5.1 HD.

What happens when the movie audio format is in DTS 5.1 HD with my setup? Will I just get 2 channels?
Will using the PS3 analog output fix this problem?

Your only option with the ps3 in this case is optical audio set at bitstream. This will send legacy dd and dts tracks to the receiver to be decoded. If you select lpcm, you will only get two channels.

Does your Marantz decode DTS? If so, you will get lossy DTS.

Do movies using DTS 5.1 HD have legacy DTS also?

Yes, the core track is imbedded in the HD MA track.

I'm not sure my Marantz decodes DTS. This might be what's causing my confusion. I will find out the next time I play a movie that does not support DD 5.1, but has DTS 5.1 HD.

I have heard something about the PS3 Multi A/V option. I know the PS3 does the decoding to analog, but not sure how it would work with my Marantz, especially surround sound. I need to do more investigation

What is your Marantz model#? It should have a DTS logo if it decodes it.

I found DTS logo on the Marantz. I will make practical observation.

Hey,

Just to say... I've seen refurbed Marantz that take HDMI audio for just over $200. You may want to look around.

If you find a model that accepts PCM via HDMI then your PS3 can output all the HD Audio formats as PCM.

It's a Marantz SR7000. I'll need to upgrade but I think I'll let the dust settle a little first.
