Default I'm torn, Sony 46" XBR6 or Samsung 52" 650...

Hello all,

I am about to drop 2000 on a new TV and I am torn between the Sony 46" XBR6 and the 52" Samsung 650. They are both the same price on Amazon. I have looked at both of them and they seem very comparable sets. I know the XBR should technically be the better TV but I dunno the extra 6 inches would be nice. (That's what she said... ). What do you guys think, is the XBR the better choice or is the Samsung the better value? Please give me any input you may have. Thanks!!!

Rain I was in the exact same boat but went with a 52inch sammy. I spent days reading reviews and stopping at electronic stores until I saw the sammy playing Dark Knight. I was sold HOWEVER I got the 630 52inch which does not have the glossy screen. The 630 is more of a matte screen which reduces glare but I read provides a better picture. It's a hard decision trust me I was there EXACTLY a week ago but so far the sammy has exceeded my expectations. My wife finally got to see cars in full HD and she was blown away by the sound and picture. This after she swore DVD could not get any clearer or vivid.....Good Luck and tell us what you got.

I have had xbr 1-6 so far, YES u read right all the first 6 of them 40" and above. Let me tell u that i was so into them until i got my lna650 from samsung. The ONLY lcd i would get over this samsung is the pioneer kuro elite 111 or the xbr 8 when the price becomes reasonable. I won't go back to an xbr under 8 after experiencing this 650 calibrated.

The glossy bezel everybody makes a big deal about is really not that bad at all. IT's so over exaggerated. I don't even notice any reflection off of it cause i'm so into what i watch. That plus i have the dioders behind them. GREAT price, similar technology at a cheaper price. I love the red/black color scheme as well. I have to post pics up here. Go for the Samsung650. Then get it calibrated. U won't be disappointed. All my friends had the xbr's cause i had them. I sold them all to them LOL. When they saw my samsung, they got mad, had me sell their xbr's they bought off of me and had me go get the samsung 650/750 for them and helped them get it calibrated LOLOL.

I guess it depends on the actual lighting or where the set sits that can effect the glare. At the local electronics store the glare made it seem very bad however the place was well lit. Either way I'm happy with the Sammy and even got some friends to start looking into a Sammy LCD.

52" 650. This is a great deal for what it is. Pretty much the same specs as the XBR, but you get a larger picture. Samsung and Sony are very comparable, it just comes down to preference. And by the way, about 15 or 20 days ago, I saw the 650 on Amazon for $1,750! Such a good deal. I think it is about $2,000 right now. It will go back down soon. I am sure of it.

I'd get the 650, the XBR is a sweet TV for sure, but the extra 6" will be nice (that's what she said... ).

i'm a theater installer for company that has done 90% sony displays for the past year or so and i skipped an employee discount on a sony thru my work and actually went elsewhere to buy the 52 650 and i couldn't be happier. after doing months of research and first hand viewing of quite a few sets, i stuck with the 650 for my budget and i couldn't be happier. Black levels and picture quality is hands down better on the samsung compared to the sony and the sony's to me tend to have a somewhat grainy hd picture on the xbr6 models. i've read many good reviews of the new sony xbr8 but when i saw it at cedia, it could have been the source material, it didn't make the impression that the 650 made on me the first time i saw it and if it is better, there is absolutely no way in hell it is worth 3 grand more for 8 inches smaller. don't get me wrong, the sony's are still very solid sets but i honestly feel that with the amount of experience i have with them, the sony just can't match the sammy in the same price range.

Thanks guys,

I had to get this ordered tonight to hopefully have it by Friday, but the frugel fred came out in me and I decided on the 46" Samsung 650 instead of the 52". It saves me 400 dollars that I can use towards other things. I appreciate the replies I was checking them for the past 30 minutes and it just seems like the Samsung is the better way to go. Anyway thanks again guys!!

I got the Samsung and I am very happy with it. Sony was overpriced and Samsung gets consistantly better reviews

Can't go wrong with that set either Rain even myself I was looking for a size no bigger than 42 inch since my entertainment center is small. I opted for the 56 inch and you should have seen the reaction of the wifey when she saw the box and the size of the LCD. I went from a Olevia 37 inch to the 52 inch. Now we have to accomodate a larger entertainment for the sammy and as you can imagine I'm sleeping in the dog house for a while...

Another Samsung guy here, had it for 4 days now. I had a Sony 46W3000 and it was barely a year old. But I have read these threads for the last couple of weeks and I had to go for the Samsung 650. Having a 120 set with the AMP and ability to turn it off or go for high has been a lot of fun....even my daughter stopped and stared at the Eagle game on Sunday for at least 5 minutes straight without moving or saying a word with the AMP on medium, and she is only 3. Now that was impressive....great set!

Good choice on the Samsung.

What is not mentioned here is that Samsung makes the LCD panels for Sony so you're paying for the label on the T.V. as the panel is the same and the firmware is very similar.

EDIT: I concede that Sony has a better remote, but I can take that $400 and buy a rack of Blurays with that money.

Speaking from an owner of the Plasma 650 I can without a doubt say that I have never been happier with a televisioin purchase so far. Everything about my tv is great (Besides the ELECTRICAL CONSUMPTION lol). Anywho I would definitely go with the the Samsung, The XBR's are decent as I have own the XBR2 of long ago, but what I would mention I am sure your stuck on LCD I would def consider you to go the plasma route on the 650 samsung, the picture is amazing for the price and you can get 50" for roughly around what you might be paying for your LCD. GO samsung!

Good choice on the Samsung, even if it's the 46", and this is coming from an owner of both the XBR4 and 750 You're going to really enjoy the Samsung, the picture quality is phenomenal for an LCD.
