turn down the Contrast but changing the picture mode from Dynamic to cinema or customize it so the picture is toned down a bit. Then put on a high def channel (without bars and without stock tickers or score lines like ESPN) and let your tv run pretty much non stop for a few days-weeks. It takes almost 500 hours for a plasma to get "broken in" where the colors finally stabilize and it is less resistant to burn in.

You don't need to do any sort of "Burn In" protection. You will get some Image Retention, which is different from burn in, but to get rid of that all you have to do is run the white wash, on my samsung it's called scrolling, it in the picture options of the menu. Gets rid of IR in no time.

There is not much you can do, a plasma is most susceptible to image retention in the first 100 hours. Image retention is just a natural part of the first 1000 hours of a plasmas life. Permanent burn in is almost a thing of the past, better phosphors and protective software is in place in most newer televisions.

Some people will tell you to run a disc of static images to break it in, this is nonsense, the disc does nothing that normal use would not take care of.

You may want to dial the contrast down when you receive it, the factories set it high for when their product is heading for bright show rooms etc. Find a comfortable level for yourself based on your viewing environment that will not cause you any eye strain.

Got it. Did your plasma come with protective software? I heard a couple of posts back about the scrolling feature.

okay, I'll try to make this a little easier to understand.

Your Plasma will not burn an image unless you leave the image for a very very long time, how long exactly I am not sure. You will however notice Image Retention. IR (Image Retention) is not burn in, it is only temporary. You can get IR from an image staying on the screen in the same spot for a certain duration of time. Such as playing a video game with heads up display. The heads up display may stay on the screen. To get rid of this your plasma probably has a feature called scrolling. Scrolling takes bars that go from black to white and they scroll across the screen wiping everything as it goes. IR goes away from movement of the picture on the screen.

and that is pretty much it. Cleared this up a little for you?

I have the 5084 and hooked it up and started using it the day I brought it home. Never had a single problem. Someone above mentioned taking it out of dynamic mode. Definitely do that. Then I would recommend using the THX optimizer found on lots and lots of DVDs to start getting your settings adjusted. It won't be a perfect calibration, but it's a good start. For a little better calibration, you can use a dedicated TV setup disc, but you'd have to buy it. Odds are that you already have the THX optimizer on something.

Thanks for the tip. I am a Netflix member, but didn't know they had the setup discs available. I'll have to get one.
