Default Quantity vs. Quality Blu-Rays

In looking through people's collections, and reading posts on here, it seems to me that alot of people just love to have a massive library of blu-rays. I used to be that way with dvds. I had and still do have a large collection, but alot of them suck. I would blind buy alot of them, and if I didnt like them, oh well, it would still increase my collection.

I treat blu-rays differently. I would like my library to all be titles that I really enjoy and am proud to have. And before I buy one, I will read it's review on here because I double-dipped enough in my dvd days. I recently went through the blu rays that have been released already and added the ones I want to my wishlist. So far, I only have 19 blu's but love them all.

Does anyone else feel the same way? Have you grown out of your "Look how many blu's I have" stage and converted to "Check out how many awesome movies I have on blu!" stage?

I actually was that way with DVD to an extent. I have become even more "that way" with BR.

I am waaaaayy over the "look at my collection phase". I usually will only buy movies that I KNOW I will watch many times.

I find a balance. The more, the merrier.. but a bad title can certainly rain on your parade. I rarely blind-buy, unless the film has a good reputation.

Same. I go by reputation as well. I also use Netflix to give flicks I've never heard of or have never seen a trial run to see if they're worth buying.

I'm the same way. I don't understand how so many people can own over 100 of these and truly love (enough to want to own) all of them. I've got about the same amount as you and I don't think it will grow too much unless 2009 explodes with great releases.

Looking through your collection, you should add Chinese Odyssey to your wishlist area at least. One of Stephen Chow's best.

I went a little nuts with DVD as well. I have movies in my collection I have seen once, when I bought them and just never looked at again. I now buy only movies I am sure to watch multiple time.

I buy what me/my family/my children like.

It's not a contest. Now matter how many you have in your collection, it will be bigger than some, and smaller than some.

And what is determined "quality" is just opinion. I can point out titles I don't like on just about anyone's collection list.

I'm with the OP on this. I went a little crazy with DVD also, and bought quite a few movies that I didn't really enjoy enough to watch more than once. With Blu Ray, though, I'm being much more careful to only get movies that I know I will want to watch over and over again.

Well i agree to a point. Of course im going to buy only movies that I enjoy. but i get blurays often from parents, relative, GF's whatever who buy just to give a gift and dont know if the movies really good or not. Im not going to get rid of it just because its not the best movie.. I like my collection to be there for people to come over and have choices, and sometimes those bad gift given blurays/dvd's can be a fun time to make fun of and joke with...

yeah, I got past the quantity stage a few weeks ago when I sold about 50-60blu's on ebay. Seems like you can own hundreds and still just end up watching the same 10-15 great movies (amazing pq and aq) every month.

I'm totally more picky after blu-ray!
I'm more serious with my collection because the quality is a step up,
naturally my selection skills also steps up!
Also with blu-ray relatively new to me I have a chance to start
from zero. naturally I want a great collection from start! many of my blu-rays
are double dipped, which is great for me.
I have so many embarrasing movies in my dvd collection, I don't want the same for my blu-ray's! Blu-ray made me more of a movie snob

Its all about quality to me, more so the films quality itself. But I have read some stuff on here that makes me laugh...

"Max Payne was a horrible movie but I might buy it because the audio is really good"

I mean, why buy a horrible movie if the audio is good? Does that make the film itself more watchable?

I reserve my Blu-rays for movie's that are really good or personal favorites of mine.

A good example will be the movie "Shooter" with Mark Wahlberg. It's one of those movies i can watch over and over, even if it's not considered the best.

I ususally use Rotten tomatoes, this site and netflix in determining if I'm going to make a purchase

I go for "quality", but that's defined as movies I like, not just what everyone else likes.

If you don't want to be stuck with a movie you'll never watch, never blind buy. Going off recommendations is NEVER a good thing when it comes to something as subjective as movies. For every critically acclaimed movie out there that has stolen the critics' hearts, there will still be many, many people who hate it - Blade Runner and No Country for Old Men are two examples. Just because it has a 99% on rottentomatoes.com doesn't mean you'll like it.

Now, the solution is costly but very well worth it: just rent the DVD of any Blu-ray you plan to buy. If you like it, great, buy it. If not, well you just saved yourself 20-30 USD.

Don't buy Face Off on blu ray if you have it on DVD already. The video transfer is less than stellar. I bought this movie 2 times on blu ray and sold it 2 times because I couldn't stand the PQ. With no lost though since I bought it during deals.

So true about NO Country for Men.

$20-30 on blu ray? No wonder you have to be so selective. My movies on average cost me about $11 and that is with a couple of boxsets included with it too.

I'm not knocking anyone's collections, of course everyone has their own opinion of what is good and worth owning. As of now, there are just not a whole ton of blu-rays I would care about owning. My dvd collection has a bunch of crap in it though. I recently got rid of alot of the shit movies, and also the movies that I know I am going to get on blu. It makes my collection much nicer, in that there is a much better ratio of good movies : entire collection.
