im currently using an Onkyo 605, and my dad upgraded his htr 5990 to an rx 1800, and im wondering if it would be worth it to swap out the receivers. Im slightly worried about under powering my new rti10's with the 605 and the 5990 has 120 wpc so i think that be alot better in that dept. The only thing im worried about is my HD audio's. The 5990 has HDMI 1.1 but will only accept 5.1 over HDMI. (which is fine for me i only have 5.1) but some blu-rays (like lions-gate) has 7.1 PCM. Will it just recognize 5.1 or will it not recognize it at all? i guess it would be helpful if someone here has/had this receiver.
specs just for the hell of it; http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/p...l?CNTID=200015 |

the 5990 is a great sounding receiver, and it has a really good amplifier section. I owned an HTR-5960 receiver, which is the same receiver minus HDMI connections and THX Select 2 certification. It sound great, but if I were you I'd stick with your Onkyo 605. There's not a significant difference in the power rating between the two receivers. By switching, you'd be giving up lossless audio decoders and 7.1 sound via HDMI if you ever wanted to add rear surrounds.
Definitely stick with the 605. |

But if he is using the PS3 to decode and is sticking with a 5.1 set-up for at least a while, should those features influence his choice?
As someone who uses how PS3 for decoding and knows I won't have 7.1 in the foreseeable future, I would move to the 5990. It is a beast compared to the 606. Much better components on the inside...weighs 45lbs. IIRC, it is the HTR version of the rx-v1X00 line which is a huge step up from the 605/606, no matter what the watts say. Addresses your current needs better than the 605/606 does. |

thanks for the opinions guys, i have the equipment for 7.1 but wont have the space for it for quite a while, All the equipment i have does the decoing (ie PS3 and HD-A2) so im good there. Im going to give the yamaha a shot. My last receiver was a yamaha HTR-5860 and i really enjoyed it. ill update my theater thread with impressions.
