Default Best Edit.

Best editing you've ever seen? What movie? What made it great?

Not necessarily, then why give out Academy Awards? Best Film Editing?

Bullitt (1968), French Connection (1971), Jaws (1975), Star Wars (1977)?

Because those editors are the best at their craft.

Editing is a subtle art, you can change the way an audience looks at a particular character or group of characters just with a few switches in camera angles.

If I had access to all the shots in the Matrix, I could probably have the audience hating Neo and everything he stood for.

Think of it this way, unless someone is up to their eyeballs in the craft of moviemaking, I've yet to hear ANYONE {and most likely others are the same way} walk out of a movie theater saying "the editing in that movie was TOP notch!"

Having said that the Academy Awards are a wank fest anyway, it's a small group of people telling folks who hang on their every word what to like.

couldn't agree more. editing is top notch when a movies just flows without causing confusion as a result of poor cutaways

That it is invisible, makes it known. To those who know what to look for. That is.

That was my point. What film impressed you? Without even realizing it, till later?

Sometimes I'll watch a movie and then wonder why they didn't edit out some of the stupid cheesy lines that if would have been omitted would have made the movie that much better.

JFK: Stone used Hank Corwin, a TV commercials-editor, to do chaotic, sixty-second commerical-like cuts.

I see what you are saying, however, in a couple flicks I actually noticed how exceptional it was and how it improved the overall experience. But yes, bad editing slams you in the face and takes you out of the story, and good editing just disappears.

Just like somebody managed to make a horror movie out of Mary Poppins. Like you said, some editors are the best at their craft. They can make anything appear the way they want it to.
