Update on my New HT system.... Question about Polk - Blu-ray Forum

So i started a thread a while back about getting my new HT system. check my sig for more info. i have since then got all the speakers together. I now have two questions.

Late last night while listening to my Mp3 collection on my PS3, i noticed a sort of scratching noise coming out of my speakers, more specifically, it seemed like the noise was coming out of my tweeters. A little, more info on my speakers, My Monitor50 were bought used for $79 plus 19 shipping at eletronics expo. i fear that they sold me some bad speakers. i know i screwed up and i could have bought the 50s for $99 @ newegg, but at the time they didnt have the sale. So i switched the listening mode to all channels on my onkyo 706 and listened closely to my new TSi100 and i could hear the same tearing/ scratching noise. i couldnt figure out why this noise existed. My question now is, I noticed the the monitor 50 and the tsi100 had some copper metal bridging the gap btw the two speaker wire inserts holes. Is this supposed to be left this way even if you are not installing the Bi-Amp mode?

Also, do you guys think it would be worth it to send these speakers back?
Just a side note, i noticed when i palyed an actual CD in my PS3, i didnt hear any tearing or scratching noise. thanks for looking

If you removed those bridges (as I call them) between the two sets of inputs on the speakers, then you're only hearing half of your speakers. Re-install those things and try it again, with and without the bi-amp.

What is the bi-amp. All i did was hook ip my wires from the speakers right into the reciever

Did you remove those gold plates on the back of the binding posts?

Also, are these mp3s ripped to the PS3 or traveling via a media center pc and a wireless connection?

How about your receiver? What is it? And what about the source material? Have you tried a blu ray disk or a factory CD? It could be that you are listening to a low quality MP3 and your equipment is fine.

If it only happens with mp3s, it's the source. If it plays fine on a cd, then I would look at the bit rate your mp3s are encoded with. Mine don't run any lower than 192kps while my average is 256kps and my few favorite bands get 320kps which is top quality for an mp3. If you are running at 128kps or even 96kps, you are going to here major artifacts in the sampling rate when playing your mp3s on an amplified source with decentt speakers, such as in your case.

As far as i know all my mp3s are at 192 at least. i had the mp3 copied over to my HD on the PS3. i use an onkyo 706 with HDMI connections all thru. i do have the copper bridge in place on the speakers. what is bi-amp connecting?

You should google Bi-amping. I was also reading something about the PS3 CD ripping quality not being so great. It has to do with the bit rate. That's just my opinion. I looked into this after my PS3 started doing a loud noise when ripping a CD.

i once had the same thing happening....what do you have the internal ps3 volume set to? 0 +1, +2 etc? leave it at zero if it is not and the distortion should go away

Just out of curiosity, even though you have mentioned that you don't have problems with certain audio sources, have you checked to make sure none of your speaker connections are loosening up (including the straps on the backs of the Polks)? Also, are you running a minimum of 16 gauge wire for your speakers?

Yes to all your questions sir. Also, may i add to all reading, i didnt rip my MP3s from the ps3. i did it from my PC and moved them over to my ps3's HD
