Canada: "Recession is a golden ticket for Cineplex Galaxy"

Movie theatre business seems to be up in Canada in 4Q 2008 compared with 4Q 2007:

“Cineplex Entertainment experienced its best year ever in 2008,” said Ellis Jacob, President and CEO. “We achieved
new all-time records in key metrics including attendance, box office, concession, other revenue and total revenue. This
culminated in record annual adjusted EBITDA of $144.9 million and distributable cash of $1.85 per unit. During the
fourth quarter we opened three new theatres in Ontario; and in spite of the difficult economic environment, we generated
growth of 15.8% in total revenues, 16.5% growth in attendance and 39.8% growth in adjusted EBITDA.”

Glad to see someone is doing well out there.

Profits are up because they have raise their tickets prices by 1.45 in one year .

In Winnipeg, around this same time last year, tickets were about 8.50 and now they are 9.95 a piece!! I, myself have pretty much stopped going to the theatres as much (I used to go every week now maybe once a month if that).

These prices are ridiculous and if tickets keep going up that much that fast, I will stop going period.

Sorry for my rant but it really pi$$es me off.
