PS3 --> HDMI --> Receiver
Reciever --> HDMI --> Sammy850

Set PS3 audio to LPCM over HDMI.

No.. you can use $3 cables and they'll work just fine.

If you're still able to return the monster cable and buy a cheaper one I'd highly recommend it.

Did you remember to set the PS3 to output sound over HDMI? It defaults to the multimedia cable it comes with.

See here for a walkthrough of the menu.

That's fine.. and if you have video then your receiver is set correctly.

There are two reasons for you to not have sound though that I can think of off hand, assuming you get sound from other sources.

1) You haven't set your PS3 to use the HDMI cable for sound. Unlike the video mode, it has to be set manually.

2) Your receiver can't pull audio out of an HDMI cable (pass through). And I'm pretty certain this isn't the case..

I added a link in my last post to show you what needs to be set.. hopefully that does it for you.

That does sound like a passthrough receiver, which means you'd have to use optical until you upgrade receiver.

I was looking at the specs and didn't see any mention of it, however a user review on amazon mentions that it is in fact a passthrough receiver. Meaning it'll pass audio through the HDMI input to anywhere except your wired speakers.

You'll have to just put up with optical until you upgrade your receiver.

Yeah.. you can even get away with the 606 if it has enough inputs for you.

I'd recommend Marantz though.. the sr-5003 or sr-6003 on up.

Onkyo receivers run much hotter, they're bigger, and seem to have about as many complaints from folks in the forum as cheers. Never read anything bad about Denon/Marantz..

I just confirmed on the Denon website that this model is only a video switching unit. The 789 is the first unit that supports HDMI Audio.

Sorry about that.

In the mean time, connect the PS3 with optical until you upgrade your receiver.
