Default Spidey 3 down 60%, but still #1 and earns more than S and S2

From http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Movi....ap/index.html

Quote:
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Even when he takes a huge fall, Spider-Man comes out on top.

Sony's "Spider-Man 3" took in $60 million in its second weekend, a hefty 60 percent drop from its record debut a week earlier but good enough to easily outdistance the competition and remain the No. 1 movie, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"After a record-breaking opening weekend, to me this is an appropriate second-weekend drop," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "Any studio would be happy to have a movie opening with $60 million, let alone a second weekend with $60 million."

With $242.1 million domestically in just 10 days, "Spider-Man 3" continued to beat the box-office pace of its predecessors. After 10 days, 2002's "Spider-Man" had grossed $223 million, while 2004's "Spider-Man 2" had taken in $225 million.

"Spider-Man 3" quickly became the year's top-grossing film, hurtling past "300," the Warner Bros. battle epic that has taken in $208 million.

Second-weekend drops for successful studio films typically are well below 50 percent. But "Spider-Man 3" shattered records with $151.1 million in its first weekend, making a big decline virtually inevitable since so many people already had seen the film.

"When you're in that stratosphere, we had to assume we would be in the range of a 60 percent drop," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony.

The weekend's other new movies had fair to poor openings.

So, in 10 days, Spiderman 3 has well exceeded the total 2007 gross of ALL Universal Studios releases.

This is going to be a monster BD release later this year. Killer app territory, for sure.

Thats not saying much for what Universal has been dishing out lately. The Universal titles I want are all a few years old.

And that is sad, really.

It helps Blu-ray, but it is sad for such a venerable studio.

what's truly sad is how crappy the movie is to merit this kind of success. =\ on the other hand, not like there's truly been a great reason to go to the movies this year, so you have to take what you can get i suppose.

actually...while I really liked parts of the movie, the storyline felt thrown together and the dancing scenes were unnecessary...

the more I think about the movie...it kinda let me down but was still really entertaining...especially with the special effects...

It was two movies crammed into one and they pulled it off fairly well for the most part except for a lot of the interaction between Peter and MJ. MJ in the comics is a very special character and special lady, unlike what we've seen in the movies and especially part three. I just totally did not buy the character or where she was coming from in this thing whatsoever.

^^ Despite this, I still had a hell of a good time with it overall and I'm looking forward to my Spiderman Trilogy BD disc set hopefully in time for Christmas, if not sooner.

(Ya hear me, paidgeek? )

As long it helps Blu-ray smack HDDVD around even more then it has served its purpose. After all, these days movies are more about popularity than quality.

To be honest, I felt the movie was okay. Just that... okay. I did enjoy it but found some scenes to be too sappy and the storylines used could had been worked on more and if necessary, make it longer to add more depth to the character of Venom. Quite a pity how they made a weakling out of Venom. They killed him just like that. It's unlikely we'll see him again considering how the scene was executed. I would give the movie a 6 out of 10 meaning it's neither bad or great. Just average.

One thing that still gets me is the rubberman syndrome.

Oh well, that's Hollywood for you.

Though I did see it digitally projected at Niagara Square. They just got their first digital projector and boy... it's quite something! Hope the local theatre here in St. Catharines will get a digital projector soon because the image quality was just remarkable.

Yes, it is a complete disaster!

These are the kinds of disasters that Universal wishes it could have.

Poor Sony... pedalling this uber-selling crap... they must be crying all the way to the bank...

It is a bit sad though, Children of Men is a pretty good movie, much better than SM3, yet it struggled to break even in the box office and had to wait for a HV release to turn a profit.

I just did a few calculations, and I came up with $600m profit for SM3 alone and it isn't a very good film, it isn't even a good film, just average to below average.

Oh well, all fun and games though.

I think the audience response to Spidey 3 will determine how the BD will be packaged. If it's all positive, it'll be released individually. If it's mixed, then we MAY see a packaged release a la M:I box set and then released individually later, OR the box set selling for 20% cheaper than the individual releases' prices combined. That's my thinking anyway.

I watched w/ my son and I always enjoy seeing movies w/ my kids. On its own merits, i thought it was decent. Not great but I had fun w/ it. I think a major issue these days is that people have unreasonable expectations for a few bucks. This is true of games too. It's the 3rd movie in the series, the characters have been run through and there isn't much new to get into. many series have the same issues. Was "Return of the Jedi" great? Actually it reeked. How about "Alien 3"? Stinkola.
