Default Blu-ray vs it's DVD counterpart

Is it just me or do alot of Blu-rays not look much better then the DVD counterpart? I'm not saying so much as current releases, but some flicks from the 90's. I just watched Tommy Boy on Blu and really didn't see that great of a difference. The same thing with Event Horizon. Blow seemed good in some scenes and in other's not alot of eye candy. Obivously they are transfers and not actually shot with HD cameras, but I guess I expected more.

movies can only look as good as the source, including the budget, equipment, and conditions they were shot on. some titles will look lightyears better than the dvds, others not as much, but in every case i've encountered they always end up looking better than the dvd to some degree.

What kind of answer do you think you are gonna get? This is a Blu-ray forum.

even the worst blu ray is better than its dvd counterpart. it does depend on your eyes, your tv too.

also, there are plenty of old movies that look sensational

Some transfers have been less than impressive and that's a shame, especially when you consider the premium we pay for a Blu-ray copy. Most of them do look and sound better than their DVD versions, but only you can decide if the addional investment for a Blu-ray copy is worth it.

On older movies I always check the AQ/PQ reviews. If it's less than 3.0...I won't consider an upgrade or a purchase. I'll go and buy the DVD copy for $8-$10.

u choose wrong bd's
there are some bluray movies category7 .do u think that movie needs a bluray format?
my point is some good movies can ouput so much
its all depends when di dthey shot the movie and how did they convert the negative .you have to take all the factors into consideration

I only own 3 "older movies" but 2 of them (Top Gun and First Blood) are significant upgrades in both PQ and AQ from the DVD versions. I was rather unimpressed with the PQ of Predator; however, it was still a slight upgrade, but the DTS-HDMA audio track made it worth the double dip.

Don't get me wrong, all the Blu-ray titles do look better, but I just wanted to see what everyone else thought. I just got the bluray player a month ago, so I'm new to the bluray scene. I actually popped in Tommy Boy DVD and did a small comparison and it did look alot better, haha. I think now that most of my TV watching is HD, I've been spoiled and am forgetting what NON HD is.

Wow, a simple question and it seems I pissed some people off. I am not attacking the Bluray format, I was just really asking a question. I have plenty of BD that look awesome, but was just stating that some of mine didn't look steps above the DVD version.

lol i don't think you pissed anyone off...it is a valid observation that some blurays don't look that much better than the dvds. plus, movies like tommy boy, while they will look good in HD, are not the type of BDs' to "wow" anyone

sure some aren't great transfers...... but don't let the age of a movie fool you....

check out 2001, bladerunner, patton, Casablanca, and Sleeping Beauty just to name a VERY FEW...... All great transfers, and the first two will give any new movie a run for its money.

Also, the sound quality upgrade is worth the price of admission by itself.

How old is a title is not necessarily the main factor to consider when judging the picture quality of certain movies.

i.e. The Adventures of Robin Hood (released in 1938) looks MUCH better than Crash (released in 2004).

Another "oldies" that blows their DVD counterparts out of the water (and many new releases):
Dog Day Afternoon
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
The Shining
The Searchers
Mad Max 2 (aka The Road Warrior in USA)
A Passage to India
etc.

and while criticized for the use of DNR or coz the heavy grain: Amadeus, The Last Emperor and The Godfather Trilogy are IMO a significant upgrade over the previous DVD releases.

In short: I have yet to find a BD that doesn't improve the movie experience when compared to a DVD. and I have already watched Rocky on BD!

I just purchased 2001 (as well as Superman and Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut) from Amazon and am expecting it any day. I cannot wait to see how this looks in Blu. I haven't been as excited for any of my Blus to arrive as I have for this one, with perhaps the exception of Transformers.

Back to the OP, though, your observations match up with mine -- and I'm sure a lot others', too -- about the PQ not being that much better than the DVD release. At the very least, however, I will say that all old movies I've seen that have been updated to Blu look better to at least some extent. As stated earlier, the difference may or may not be worth the extra cost or double-dip.

What do you mean by that? Do you mean movies beck then weren't shot in High Definition? Because 35mm has a far higher resolution them most Digital cameras out today apart from the RED 4K and some others.
