Default 120hz dilema

I was one of the many crazed folk that stood outside Best Buy on Black Friday I got the Samsung 52" lcd 1080p 60hz tv .since then I saw a friends set that is the same make and size but 12hz and I am amazed at the difference .Please have mercy on me but is there any way to make a 60hz. tv a 120hz. tv ? If I would have known about it at the time I would have spent the extra to get the 120hz I thought I had done all my research but that little tidbit was looked over AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! HELP.

This is what you are looking for, if you like that look. Only option would be a new TV.

Lance,

Unfortunately, a 60Hz television cannot be "made" into a 120Hz. It is a matter of how often the screen refreshes the video (not to be confused with movie & video source frame rates). Yours will do so at the standard 60 times per second. It is an unchangeable aspect of your TV's design and operation.

Thanks for the quick responses so basically just take this one back and get the one I want right? right makes sense to meI was just wondering if there was any way to change it on the set I have I like the picture I have but when I saw the 120hz and what it did to the picture whoa it looked like a live video feed of the actual filming of the movie its like your right there.

This has been mentioned a number of times on various threads, but it's not the 120 Hz refresh rate that gives you that video look (which gets pretty annoying after the initial "wow, that looks different" response, IMHO), it's the motion interpolation that does that. To each their own, but motion interpolation is really only good for sporting events-- it is just plain awful for movies. I don't own a motion interpolation set, but most folks that do seem to turn it off for movie viewing.

I preety much had the same reaction when I first got my Sammy LCD. After a while I wanted to switch back to normal viewing. My wife even had the same WOW feeling and now she can't stand watching with the enhancement turned on. It's great showing off to new hi-def viewers but something about does not seem right when viewing my movies.....almost looking too real if that makes sense.

No, they are saying that 120hz is fine, but with 120hz, you leave the motion enhancers off.

However, with the a TV that has 120 hz and with AMP or Motion Enhancer on for sports, it does make a difference (my opinion)....so if you love sports, then a new TV would be in order to obtain this option......I did 2 weeks ago and it looks great and is nice to have the option for other types of viewing....

If you love sports you'll pick up a plasma, far more accurate rendering because of the massive increase in response time.

Refresh rate means very little.

I did the very same thing. I was at a friends house, he bought an sony XBR4 120hz, I was amazed by the picture. Then a few months later I bought a Sony Bravia 60hz 1080p on a great deal.

Hooked it all up an was expecting it to look similar to my friends tv. haha boy was I wrong. So I basicly waited for another good sale and bought a Samsung 120hz. Now I'm happy but I had to spend $3000 to get there.

my tv has a off, standard and high setting for motionflow so just leave it on standard because to me its just right that way. The high setting is just to over whelming after time but the standard give normal pictures that little push to make them stand out over normal tvs.

The reason it has that "too real" look is become the frame rate dramatically increases. You should know if you have ever played a intense fps game on a mediocre PC. During intense firefights your frames are under 30 which makes everything slowed down and it looks like the image is skipping every couple seconds and then when everything settles down your frames go up and probably over 60 which makes everything seem much smoother (and better if your gaming but not for movies). I guess most people here aren't used to high frame rates because they game on consoles which are locked at 30fps. So basically over 30 frames for games = good but for movies = not good at all.

Yup, i tried watching movies with the AutoMotion Plus on high, but i can do it. I always keep it on low or for certain movies I actually turn it off. for normal OTA viewing i keep it on high though.

You're wrong on multiple fronts.

1. The "too real" look is from the frame interpolation software- often called Motionflow or Motionplus. There's a sticky on the subject.

2. The reason games go for a high framerate is because it's not a constant. It looks like it's "skipping" because there is a large dip in framerate as the console/PC has to work harder to run the software- ie more things on the screen. This isn't an issue with cable broadcast or dvd/bd/vcr/what-have- you playback.

3. Film is shot at 24 frames a second. 60hz is not a multiple of that. As a result you get 3:2 pulldown judder. At 120hz, assuming the set handles the conversion properly, you don't get that, and as a result on film you get smoother playback. This isn't really an issue at all on most plasmas.

Don't try to apply PC's tweaker framerates to cinema and normal broadcast technology. They're really not the same thing.
