Default Help me decide - TV Dilema!

Last year i bought a samsung 56" DLP. When I bought the tv, it had everything I was looking for in terms of pricing and picture quality.

Unfortuneatly, the purchase didn't work out to well. I had numerous problems with the screen and now thanks to my extended warranty, the tv is being replaced.

Now is where the dilema begins. Now I'm more informed that DLP technology is dying, however, should I let that stray me from my preferences?

I want a large screen, at least for now I'm thinking at least 56" to match what I have. However, Plasma and LCD's will probably leave me in the 50" range due to price. Even then I'll have to tack on some extra money which I do not want to do.

Would I be wise to sacrifice screen size for a current technology or go with a DLP providing I am happy with the picture.

If I should forget DLP all together, what are my concerns with plasma/lcd? Plasma is known for burn-in? If I play video games, do I need to worry? I'm so confused. Please help.

I'm biased.. but I would go for the slightly smaller flat screen

PS. I was thinking of this for the DLP. As for Plasma or LCD, I have no idea what I would consider. Price rules everything.

I'm not sure yet. I think they base the price on comparable models to my current tv so seeing that prices have dropped and what I can get the same tv for. I'm guessing they will give me maybe 1200. This would put me in a DLP with that kind of money.

I "might" be willing to put in some extra, maybe 500. I guess it all comes down to what I get. If it's 1200 or under, I'm going to be forced to go DLP. I am happy with my current tv (other than the issues it's having) but if there is a chance to get better, of course I'm going to try!

Up till this tv, I've always gone panasonic. they have been so reliable for me no matter what the product. I remember when I looked last year, I chose my current 56" samsung dlp over a 42" panny plasma simply because i wanted bigger and the picture was nice. Prices have changed in a year, that's for sure!

go for panasonic plasma. Plasma will get you better PQ, and for a 50" model, probably run you about 2k for entry level set. If your main priority is gaming, then maybe 120 hz lcd, but picture will still look best on plasma. Follow break-in instructions, and you'll be fine....no permanent burn-in.

+1

Pan th50pz80u is on amazon for under 2k. Great TV also gives you 24p
Pz80u is around $1400 (cheapest 1080p panasonic)
Pz85u $1550 (no 24p but you get higher contrast then the 80u)

if you have 2k to spend go with the 800u

Here you will get the following answers...

1 - Go LCD (Sony, Samsung)
2 - Go Plasma (Panasonic, Pioneer)
3 - Go DLP

There are people who support every technology. Advocates for each one. Ultimately you can only use the information you get and make your OWN choice.

From personal experience, Panasonic is the best choice. We have 3 of them. 2 plasmas (just got the 50" 800U for Christmas), and 1 LCD. We also have a Samsung plasma that is gorgeous and a Westinghouse LCD.

If it were me - I would go Panasonic Plasma. The color and depth are unbeatable by LCD at this time. A step down in size means nothing - especially when you can step up in quality

I personally would recommend the 50" 800U line. Really great set for the money. Or from what I read, a 52" Samsung (they seem to be the LCD of choice today).

I really appreciate all the info.

I am going to go to circuit city today hopefully just to pre-browse so i'm prepared when I can actually make the swap.

Picture quality is definitely priority, screen size is second so I'll have to look at what's available and then decide which one I will get maximum pleasure out of. If my eyes tell me there is not a huge difference between plasma and dlp I'll probably go with dlp but if I'm blown away at plasma I'll probably go that route.

I suspect I'll be blown away by plasma. I honestly don't even look at them when in store because I don't want to tease myself. when I looked last year, as i said, I almost did buy but the size of the screen turned me away. I'm pretty excited to see what they can offer.

So this is a good tv? What are key specs I should look for?

Plasma in well lit room suffers from a lot of glare lcd has no problem with that.
Plasma is a lot heaver than lcd and I think plasma at times still has a problem with burn in (some will say its not a problem).

Yes, it is. The major difference between the 80/85 vs the 800/850 is the later have a full sheet of glass across the front. No bevel. The 80/85 have a bevel.

yes!!! amazing TV thats the one i have! deep, deep blacks and super accurate color reproduction as well! LCD's cannot come close the the PQ of this tv! I have had both LCD and plasma and plasma will blow you away!

Highly rec this TV. If you want to go with spending a few hundred more you can get the 85U which will give you an additional 10000:1 in contrast ratio for a total of 30000:1, that's really the only difference between the 80u and the 85u

not true. Plasma Anti Glare coatings on the screen, all but eliminate this now, panasonics are awesome in regards to this,

Plasma is heavier than LCD you are right on that but urn in is a thing of the past. If you get burn in on a plasma set these days then something is wrong. Pixel orbiters eliminate burn in now

Well, just got back from the store to compare models and I can't even believe I was considering DLP. I first checked out the panny plasma (one listed above) and it was a great picture. In all honesty, the LCD grabbed my eye more because I liked the brightness but I'm still deciding on the plasma.

After looking at the plasma I checked out the DLP and the picture was nothing in comparasin, especially the 61" Samsung with LED.

So, this is still all depending on what circuit city gives me for credit but I will be going for the Panasonic either the 80U or the 85U. 85 will be my first choice obviously.
