Default Do you think BluRay is the FINAL physical home video format?

The title says it all. Do think BluRay may be the end all, be all of the home video world?

Years ago, I thought there'd be nothing that would top DVD, so I invested a lot in the format. We had close to 500 DVDs. All of which I'm trying to sell now that I'm getting into BluRay.

I just don't foresee anything looking or sounding any better than BluRay does. I know a lot of people think digital downloads are the future, but I don't see that taking off anytime soon with anywhere near the quality that BluRay provides. Plus I still think a lot of people, including myself, like to actually own the physical media.

So what do you guys think?

do you really think that humanity will never be able to create something better than blu ray?? not ieven in thousands of years?lol of course it s not the "end"
but when? for everybody or a few people? at what cost ? will there be sufficient improvements ?etc are the real questions, you never heard about holographic for instance..

Digital downlowns will hurt dvds ,maybe a new "affortable" technology in 15 to 20 years will replace bluray and will be backward compatible. The technology is still at a baby stage with bluray.

There will always be something better coming out we as humans are never satisfied with what we have, we'll use blu-ray as another starting point for newer format.

I dont see Blu going away anytime soon. There may be a better delvery system (getting a movie on something the size of a postage stamp) but the PQ and AQ is pretty well topped out. TV's are going to be 1080 for a long time. And even if they do come out with a 2k disk, what are you going to watch it on? How old is DVD? And it is still going strong. Blu will be here for the next twenty years.

Well of course I didn't mean the end all format EVER. I just don't see anything making any real improvements as far as PQ and AQ go.

I've heard of the holographic displays, but I'm sure it'll be a LONG time til the average consumer has those in their living room.

well.... even if you QUADRUPLE to resolution of Blu-ray, it would only make a marginal improvement (that you can distinguish with the human eye) until you get into the larger display sizes...... but with that said, I think eventually 60" and 70" Plasma (or other new technology) displays will be more common in households (10 years from now perhaps.... maybe more) one road-block is the weight, and another is price..... once paper-thin, lightweight displays can be had at very affordable prices for most consumers, then the greater resolutions will benefit many..... but If I had to guess an "AVERAGE" display size for the american home.... it's gotta be 27-30" or so..... perhaps less.

As far as audio is concerned, people seeking to improve their audio quality still have a lot of venues to do so..... the average consumer uses the speakers that are in the television themselves, and even here, which is a forum dedicated to Blu-ray, it's obvious that the majority of the people care far more for the PQ than the AQ, so catering to the Audio-junkies isn't the profitable approach.

I think if they can bring the player to the $100 range and movies to the 10-15 range it will finally faze out older dvd and be the standard for quite a while. However, this will not happen until prices fall for the masses to jump on board.

I daresay that something may come out before Blu Ray even becomes the standard.

No way. There was talks about companies testing out full HD movies on flash drives. I believe that will be the next thing. Eventually, they'll want to get away from using discs all together.

There's the big issue of you can only experince better PQ on a TV of at least 60 inches.

The only thing that might change is disc to flash cards/drives and downloads.

If thats the case im not about to upgrade all my movies again.

I hope Blu-ray lasts a good long time as I have put a lot into it already. I just don't see myself buying anything that will be so much better than Blus that I have to buy it. There's only so much the human eye can distinguish. So unless the next step is a holo-deck, I think I'm good
