Default Help with purchasing LCD

Tax time is coming, looking to spend around 1000 or less

Desires:
40"
1080p
120hz (I do alot of gaming/ps3)

I currently have a crappy noname 1080i set, its 32", it sucks majorly, my tv stand is an ikea one that by measuring, is 41 inches across, 48 inches diagonal, just over 27 inches high

based off what I've seen from some tv's a 40" should fit in this perfectly, if anyone can recommend anything with everything listed and that would fit in my stand, you would win an invisicookie, you guys helped me get my badass onkyo surround rig too

thanks in advance

nevermind, thought it was cheaper to get the model down, but its not 120hz, anyone know how big a difference it makes to the average person?

is the Samsung LNT4069FX any good? finding that for 1000, the closer to 1000 the better, dont wanna go too much over if at all, also, if i can pick it up at a store like best buy or similar, thats even better so i dont have to wait for shipping and if something goes wrong, ship back.

Thats a pretty good set. It's not 120Hz though. 120Hz refresh rates on sony start with the "W" series i believe.

how obvious is the difference of 60 and 120 to the average user? is it worth the like 2-300$ difference?

Many people will look at a 120Hz set and not see the difference from a 60Hz set if the video-interpolating software on the 120Hz set is shut off. With the software on at its highest setting, it produces movie content with a "live" video motion and quality to it. Some people find this wonderful, while some find it objectionable. There's no right or wrong - only what your eyes and personal taste tell you.

The best way to really judge the differences for yourself is to actually go to a store, find someone knowledgeable there, and see a demonstration of the differences. Keep in mind that the screen's refresh rate, whether 60Hz or 120Hz, is a fixed operation of the TV, and has nothing to do with the "motion enhancing" (video interpolation) settings. You should be able to see the difference readily between a 60Hz set and 120Hz set with its motion enhancing software running.

There is a plethora of threads on the subject of 120Hz refresh rates in these forums. Do a search on "120Hz" and read as much as you can. Be informed when you go out to have a look at some TVs.

Lastly, in the case of a lot of LCDs with 120Hz refesh rates, you usually will get a few other additional TV features for your extra money spent as well.

^^ What Rob J said above. I have a 120Hz only(no frame interpolation) set and i really dont see a difference between them. 120Hz is to combat motion blur, but if you've been watching 60Hz your whole life, you probably dont even notice motion blur anyway. If you're one of those people that can notice motion blur like a sore thumb, then go 120Hz

might as well go 120hz, so far its that tv, i wish i could get it for around the same price at a store, then Id be able to just go pick it up, but ordering online is ok. after i order (whenever my tax return comes in, filing tonight, so hopefully soon) need to figure out what i want to watch for my first bluray on a huge tv upgrade, for reference, this is the POS im using now: http://salestores.com/konkakdl.html

thing sucks so bad, but i got it cheap forever ago, had it about 2 or 3 years, only has 1 hdmi, and the vga input on it refuses to do any widescreen res lol.

only reason i got it originally was 3 years ago, it was 500 instore at tiger direct, i was living in miami at the time so i just went and picked it up. im excited for a huge upgrade, between going to 1080p and 120hz, should be pretty sweet, tryin to think of best gauge for colors and darks in a movie to test on my ps3/bluray, i think 1080p will warrant another mgs4 playthrough though.

I just used my Ratatouille Blu-ray to calibrate my 650, however the calibration is fairly good out of box. for the most part you will just have to make minor adjustments to sharpness, contrast and color. will def have to lower the backlight setting though. The only fault i found in the TV was the viewing angles. If you're sitting too far off angle, the color look super washed out. my Panasonic 32" has one of the best viewing angles i have ever seen on a LCD. Sammy falls short in that dept.

Yeah I may download a calibration disc or something to set everything up, as for angles, not too worried about it, generally sitting facing it straight on.

Cool. aside from the angles, i have no complaints about this set. best bang for the buck IMO. you wont be disappointed. And also, if you dont download the cali-disc you can alway use tweaktv.com. Gives you a good idea of the setting you should start with, then tweak as needed.

I heard it was a fix for a minor issue. They said it completly messes up you calibration though. People are saying after updating the picture was much brighter and had to recalibrate the brightness and backlight again.
