Talking Entire Beatles' catalogue getting remastered on CD and a strong chance of Blu-rays

http://www.shorefire.com/index.php?a...release&o=2872

The Beatles' Entire Original Recorded Catalogue Remastered By Apple Corps Ltd. And EMI Music For Worldwide CD Release On September 9, 2009.

While many people have been waiting for this news for years, I have even better news for Blu-ray fans. The press release does not mention Blu-ray at all, but I have learned from a person with insider connections to EMI (who knew of these remasters long before they were announced) that strongly believes the remastered albums will eventually show up on Blu-ray with high-resolution audio at 24 bit 192 kHz in stereo and extras. It might be a year or two for the Blu-rays though, as the Beatles wait for the BD market to grow bigger and let collectors pick up the cds first.

Edit: The release date of the CDs is 09.09.09

Not interested at all in re-mastered CD's, although it seems the '87 CD releases are generally regarded as totally crap compared to just about any needle drop, nevermind the Ebbett's drops, so I'm sure this is good news for those to whom CD is the only choice.

It would be a shame for them to wait a few years for the Blu-ray's, this is the type of thing that sells a product and they'd sell just as many releasing now as they would in two years unless the format goes away.

No mention in the press release of anything other than CD, no vinyl, DVD-A, EMI never supported SACD, no Blu-ray, but I woud definitely crap my pants if the Blu-ray releases come to fruition sooner rather than later.

The Beatles make every decision regarding their product as a cold business decision. To be honest, I agree with them that the Blu-ray market does not have the penetration yet to properly support these releases. It is why moviemakers like Lucas have not yet released Star Wars on Blu-ray. Do not be surprised to see deluxe Blu-ray editions down the line of each album.

But the releases will still be there.

Lucas is an idiot regarding Star Wars. It's a catch-22, these items won't sell as much until Blu-ray has better market penetration but Blu-ray won't have better market penetration until items like these are available.

You don't start off a new format (like music on Blu-ray) with a few releases by "Das Rat Killers" some bizzare German techno-funk band that nobody's heard of, you start it off with Pearl Jam, The Beatles, Stones, Billy Joel, Elton John, etc., if you want people to lift their heads up and take note.

I won't be surprised to see Beatles' music on Blu-ray in a few years from now, I've been predicting since the end of the format war that Blu-ray will save music for audiophiles. I just wish it would happen sooner rather than later, especially with all the work they've supposedly put into these Beatles remasterings.

i might get a couple of these releases. they look sweet. i'd pass on them if they come to blu-ray though. neil young's archives volume 1 is due out on blu-ray and i'm passing. it's too limiting a format. neil young doesn't plan to have high quality downloads of all the songs on the blu-ray so i could only play them at home, which is very crippling. i listen to music in my discman more often than not. this is one audiophile who will be sitting out on this new music format. just like i did the last two that failed. and the others before that.

If these came out on Blu-ray, I'd certainly buy them. Given the Beatles' history of avoiding digital distribution so far, taking advantage of the anti-copy protection in Blu-ray seems like a smart idea.

If they did release on Blu, it will provide a good indicator of consumers desire for high quality music. Hopefully, Blu-ray music will provide the outlet the music industry desperately needs.

Maybe EMI's waiting to see how the Neil Young box sells before the catalog gets done in blu ray.

Of course, the most important reason to wait to release the catalogue on Blu-Ray is that it lets them double dip. People will buy both, and they know that.

I have their entire catalogue on MFSL half-speed vinyl, and have avoided the inferior CDs like the plague. I may skip these CDs if there is a real possibility that they may hit Blu-Ray.

I just hope that they release the first four albums in stereo. It's been ridiculous that the first four British LP's have yet to release their CD's remastered. I have collected the first two Capitol boxsets, the Capitol Years, but missing is side one of the Hard Days Night soundtrack. The rights to the movie did not allow for these songs to be included in the boxset. To the best of my knowledge, the movie title song, Hard Day's Night, is not on CD in Stereo anywhere. I do have the original LP's, in Stereo, U.S. and British Mixes. Many of the American "Dave Dexter" mixes are substandard.

I think I'll pass. Remastered now a days seem to just involve boosting the loudness and thus flattening the dynamic range (see the remastered U2 and Led Zeppelin cd's for the worst offenders in this area).

The most recent Beatles' project, "Love" on dvd-audio, was mastered very well and sounded incredible in 5.1 surround. If the remasters are like that release I will be picking up some of them.

Being barely in my twenties, I only just discovered the Beatles.

But... all of my music listening is done through my computer or in my car. I wouldn't mind additional fidelity in either, but Blu-ray can't reach me across either. I love music, but I pair music with other tasks; Blu-ray isn't the easiest thing to pair with other things.

Hopefully I'll be able to come up with high fidelity digital copies down the line if this release ever materializes, but I think I'll just stick with the CD release. But hey, allow me to rip audio from Blu-rays and give me a means to listen in my car, and I'd be totally on board for a Blu-ray release of this stuff.

LPs by nature have compressed dynamic range, but I will vouch for the fact that the MFSL LPs of the Beatles recordings are the best that they have ever sounded. The original master tapes for older recordings like that also have more limited dynamic range due to the recording technology of the time (to say nothing of the increased noise floor.) That said, I do agree with you about the choices that are often made in the digital mastering process, but I think that it has a much greater impact with newer recordings.
