Default Pirates 1 & 2 - Black Bars??

I am kinda upset, more disappointed than anything. Got my POTC 1 and 2 in today and popped in number 1 and to my shock, I have black bars. I was expecting the movie to fill the screen.

Is this normal?

BEFORE ANYONE SAYS IT - I READ THE STICKY!

However, on the back of pirates it says - 2.35:1

What I don't understand is, Night At The Museum is ALSO 2.35:1 and it filled the entire screen.

What am I missing?

HELP!

You can mess with your tv's zoom functions, but it will probably cut off some of the picture.

If he doesn't want the bars, clearly he doesn't care about losing picture.

Default Black Bars

I'm sick and tired of hearing about people complain about the black Bars on Widescreen movies.I been watching movies this way for so long that I dont even notise the black bars anymore.Trust man Widescreen Letterboxing what ever you want to call it the movies look so mutch better this way.Movies like Ghostbusters,Star Wars, and yes The Pirate movies look the best in the 2.35.1format.

No no no. I want all the picture. I just didn't know if I can get a full screen without issue.

I don't have a problem - I was just expecting something that wasn't there. Just suprised me. Now I am ok tho

If you removed the black bars and nothing was removed from the sides as well you'd have a vertically stretched picture. You don't want picture removed from the sides so the black bars are necessary to keep the original aspect ratio and full picture.

I'll be honest, I didn't use to like bars on 2.35 movies when I had a 36" 4:3 television. You could barely see the movie, but once I got my 50" pioneer, nothing but the OAR will do.

I will say this again... I think all TV's should be freaken 2.35:1. I'd much rather have black bars on the side and have the picture be smaller for 1.85 images than 2.35 images. Not that I mind black bars at all on 2.35 movies, it just feels wrong to have movies feel like they're supposed to be much larger than flat ones.

When I was Video "dumb" still sorta am - I thought widscreen tv + widscreen movie = no black bars.

I was wrong. So I mostly bought Fullscreen movies for the longest time. I have grown out of that and buy ONLY Widescreen movies up until a few days ago. Now I buy BD.

Anyway, why can't they just make it so the movie fills the ENTIRE screen and I don't feel like I just spent all this money only to have 1/4 of my screen NOT USED. I just feel jipped kinda.

However, I don't have a problem with the bars at all. I like my entire picture on the screen.

I'm just happy as long as I get original aspect ratio. The films are framed so that they look best in that particular shape, whatever it might be.

The films are SHOT that way...removing the 2.35 mask on video would cut out more of the picture anyway for a film shot to 2.35. Besides the fact that the framing the director intended would would all messed up if it filled the screen. I think it's hilarious when I read people think they are getting jipped cause the movie doesn't fill the whole screen. Maybe you should've got a few lessons before you went to the big leagues and got an hdtv and a blu ray player. Stores should test people on what they're buying since more than half have no clue...if they pass they can buy it!

They can make it so the movie fills the entire screen. But is up to the director to decide what aspect ratio they want to use. Why would anyone want to force a director to make their movie a certain way?

I know it makes most of the crowd around here cringe but I'm like you in that I'd rather lose some of the edges for a picture that fills the screen top to bottom. I've often watched scenese and looked to what I would miss with a non-oar version and I don't think I've ever noticed a scene that wouldn't be the same with parts of the edges missing. I'm sure there are some closeups that would suffer as a result but I'd much rather have a fuller image the rest of the time. For me, it's not just that the picture is smaller, it's that we're losing over 200 lines of resolution to make it fit. I'd much rather have the full 1080 resolution and miss some of the edges.

Yes and your snide comments are not necessary. I don't need to be tested for anything. No reason to be rude to me.

I know what people are telling me and I understand it. I understand the aspect ratios and how the director wants me to see it. I get all that hoopla. Do I really like it? No. I just think this day in age - my screen should be filled with wonderfull BD bliss. Not just 3/4's of it. I can moan and groan - but in the end - I enjoy every minute of my movie viewing thanks to BD and the forum here for "informing" me and keeping me up to date.

Thank you. I have seen what is clipped off on the edges and can live without it.

At least, give me a setting to enable or disable it.

Just so you know, NATM is 1.85:1, not 2.35:1. That is why NATM fills most of your screen.

Nah, 16:9 is where it's at. But that's probably due to the fact that I'm a gamer first and movie watcher second, and all next-gen games are 16:9. To be honest though, movies have been taking more of my tv's time lately.
