Default Best/Good Upscaling DVD player?

Hey guys,

Got a buddy with a HD TV - just had twins and has no money.

He can't afford BLU (hardware + software prices) - so, he's going to be content with upscaling DVDs for now.

What a good upscaling DVD player out there?

(Please don't say he might as well buy a Blu-Ray/PS3 player. He/his wife are going with the best for the least amount of money.).

Thanks.

I have experience with the XDE500 and while although it works great for me, it introduces judder and to many artifacts for my viewing taste. But for a standalone unit, it is pretty darn good.

Do you know if he has a home PC? If so, the capabilities of it, because nvidia PureVideo HD is simply beautiful to my eyes. I don't notice any artifacts and the motion is judderless. Also, it gives capability of watching streaming movies if he doesn't already have that now. If he does have PC, but limited capabilities, if you want to go down this road, I'd suggest an Nvidia video card. If he has a fast dual or quad core computer, but with an ATI video card, I'd suggest you get zoom player and try out ffdshow post processing. While although to me, ffdshow doesn't come even close PureVideo, it is an option. Good Luck.

For the price of the Oppo you could practically buy a blu-ray player. I still have a couple Sony DVD players and have always been happy with their upconverting ability, although I rarely use them since I have gotten rid of almost all my DVDs.

Grabbed a Panny BD-30 at Sears for 98 bucks !
In these times u just gotta keep an eye for deals ! I was looking for a upconverting player and found this . Of course they only had one . Think it was just to get rid of it ,they have all the newer BD's in .
