Onkyo 706 Questions - Blu-ray Forum

HI Everyone, first post but long time lurker. I have had my Onkyo for a couple weeks now and cant figure out how to use the THX modes. When I select it on the remote, it is telling me "not available"......any advice? Thanks!

did you run the Audyssey setup? I noticed that I couldn't select them either until I used the setup mic etc...

Yeah, I ran the setup and everything sounds great. I just cant select any of the THX modes. Can you only use them while your watching a Blu-Ray or a source like that? I tried to select it while watching TV and nothing........

Hmmm, I have a PS3 with HDMI for audio streaming - and everything works fine as far as selecting THX modes. I ran the audessy - and everything has always just worked.

Not sure what the issue could be. (The PS3 is sooooo different when talking about audio formats available and how they interact with the receiver.)

Is there anything in the setup menu that you have to select? I know you can select certain audio DSPs as a default for different formats, I don't remember if you could select/de-select THX, etc.

You think it could be because as of right now I am only running a center, FL&FR and a sub? I am not actually running a full 5.1.

Yes, that's most likely the case. The 706 has DSPs for specific audio formats. You can use NEO 6, or ProLogic II to enhance "stereo" sources, like MP3's or tv shows broadcast in stereo instead of 5.1 (which is most).

As far as I know, THX is a DSP (basically) for 5.1 sources. So, if you aren't running 5.1 it may not be an option for you.

This is only a guess and could be incorrect - but it would make sense.

No problem - glad you got it figured out. I know it can be pure frustration when something doesn't work and you can't figure out why.
