Default 120Hz vs. 24p

Pardon my ignorance, but what's the advantage of having a 120Hz TV over regular one if it doesn't support 24p (e.g. sharp 52d92u) ?

I was going to say that, but I think the TV in question doesn't have an input that supports 1080p/24, just 1080p/60, so wouldn't that nullify the 120Hz "advantage" for 24fps? At least that is what I thought, though I'm not sure there.

Looked it up in Cnet & yes it does do 24fps/Pulldown & good. BUT the bad is that they (Sharp) still has the banding problem.

I hadn't checked on the TV in question, I was just going off what the original thread starter asked. Thanks for the clarification, Clyon. Now, take out the specific TV mentioned, and wouldn't a TV w/ 120Hz but no 24p support need to use the Pulldown, and not be able to display the "native" 24p signal?

It should do 24fps, that is the main point that all (most) the new tv's starting this year have 120hz, maybe it helps with pulldown so the tv passes that test?

But pulldown on my sxrd tv is only available with a 420i source & that is a 60hz tv. Anything over 420i pulldown is turned off.

I am strating to get confused.... so I googled 'Pulldown vs Native 24fps' & got mostly nothing but...

'The next Blu-ray players (from Pioneer and the like) will have an additional option. They will be able to output the 1080p/24 from the disc directly. At first you may think that if your TV doesn't accept 1080p, you'll miss out on being able to see the "unmolested" 1080p/24 from the disc. Well even if your TV could accept the 1080p/24, your TV would still have to add the 3:2 pulldown itself (the TV is still 60Hz). So you're not seeing the 1080p/24 regardless.'

CNET also says that they 24fps argument is a non-issue. They don't see much difference between 60hz and 24fps.

The hardest test one can do with there tv to show how your tv handles 24fps/pulldown is 'Star Trek: Insurrection' in the opening when they do lots of pans. The but part is, is it the movie tranfer, film type &/or speed .
My SXRD gets very jiddery in the opening panning scenes, but on other dvd's (newer dvd's) & there is a pan the sxrd tv is smoth. Even on my Sony HD CRT has trouble on that Star Terk dvd, not as bad but it is a much smaller tv so that could be it.

The Sharp LC-52D92U does not have a 1080P/24 input.

Quote from Sound and Vision magazine
The set's HDMI connections wouldn't accept 1080p/24-fps signals but had no problem with 1080p/60 signals from a Blu-ray Disc player.”

http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/hdtvs/2219/test-bench-sharp-aquos-lc-52d92u-52-inch-lcd-hdtv.html

Also some professional magazines have made an error and have said the Sharp is 120HZ refresh rate (p. 30 of June 2007 Home theater magazine is just one example).

Here is a quote from PC magazine
Although the LC-52D92U is the first Sharp LCD to offer 120-Hz "frame rate conversion," buyers should know this is not the same as true 120-Hz imaging. And given its price, I'm disappointed that the LC-52D92U's ineffective video processor did little to minimize jagged edge artifacts in standard and high-definition sources.”

“My hopes of Sharp's 120-Hz imaging eliminating the judder introduced when processing 24-fps video were dashed when I could discern no difference between it and traditional 60-Hz displays. But viewing the same content on the Pioneer PRO-940HD plasma television with its 72-Hz (3x24) display function resulted in impressively smooth (judder free) panning shots in our favorite movies.”

It's really strange that to make a 120Hz tv and not take advantage of it...

Sort of like the first 1080p display TVs that couldn't accept 1080p input signals.

Wouldn't the 120hz be useful for something like the Sensio 3D. If they worked together properly it would remove flicker.

Yes, that's too bad. The waiting for that 'right' display continues...
