Default Do all Blu-rays have grainy spots?

People including me seem to complain alot about some blu Rays being somewhat grainy some more than others, but actually every blu Ray has a grainy scene or two, or is it just me? I mean its not always noticeable but if you really look you'll see something somewhere skin color, white light, sometimes blue color patterns but hey I'am picky and the smallest portion thats grainy bothers me!

I've noticed grain in way too many movies too. Some are supposed to be like that but not all are. I have no ultimate answer to the reason of so much grain. I'd say try CGI Animations, those are the most grain-free Blurays out there.

Film grain or granularity is the random optical texture of processed photographic film due to the presence of small grains of a metallic silver developed from silver halide that have received enough photons.

Did my homework thanks,lol!

And yes animation movies are always grain free love Pixar!

Well I certainly hope so! Otherwise it'll be like watching wax figures in a sterile unrealistic environment!

If you are seeing to much grain, it is probably your settings that are at fault. Start by turning your sharpness WAY down, and then calibrate your set. Grain should be there, but not affect your movie viewing experience....

Yah the sharpness is set on 40. At first it was on 100 and it was very grainy!

As you said yourself when you "did your homework," the image created on film is created with grain. Blu-ray is a higher resolution format than DVD, so the grain inherent to the original source material (assuming it's film) is more apparent. It is actually correct and accurate to see grain in an image created from a film source. The only reason it hasn't been as apparent until now, is because the lack of definition on DVD made it less noticeable.

I'd like to see the practice of applying DNR (Digital Noise Reduction) to HD transfers of film sources STOPPED. "Scrubbing" the image to remove grain actually reduces the overall fidelity and quality of the image considerably, sometimes almost to the point of making one wonder why they bothered putting the film on Blu-ray in the first place. This whole concept of "grain is baaaaad" is flawed and incorrect. If you've seen a film in a theater, you've seen it with grain. Blu-ray simply recreates that image more accurately than DVD.

In short, if it was shot on film, it most likely will (and SHOULD) have visible grain.

DNR=baaaad
Grain=goooood

I love grain! and hate DNR! I just always find it weird in reviews when they say they prefer some scenes to be less grainy. Why would you want that? Grain gives movies shot on film the film feel. It's got a unique texture that I have grown to love.

I can't believe people are really saying they love, like or enjoy grain. If it really is a choice by the director to put that in, it's a bad choice. If you have the option to have it or not, what is the good in putting it in? You can't give me 1 good reason that there should be grain in a movie. I mean what's next, static throughout the whole movie to tell a better story???

Grain is part of the structure of film. Without grain film would not be able to capture the images you see. Without grain movies would never have been invented!

There isn't enough grain in the world, as far as I am concerned.

But with DNR you get less detail sometimes even worse then DVD. Grain is what keeps all that detail you see on Blu-ray and at the cinemas. So you aren't really getting crisp and sharp images if you don't have grain.

If I crank the sharpness too high (close to max) in my settings the grain level goes up. But I don't do that and don't care about grain. The movie The close encounter ... just looks grait and that movie is just grain.
