Default Disney to release all Blu-rays with DVD disc

I see that disney have started to release movies where the box contains

1 dvd
1. blu-ray disc

of the same movie.

Hmmm I don't see the point.

So if I buy the the I can choose between bd or blu-ray.

But I don't care about DVD I just want the BD.

Disney are just being pregressive.
This means they'll only need to release one version in the future. DVD buyers will feel the need to buy a Blu-ray player to profit from HD whereas BD buyers will like having an extra copy to lend out/take on vacation.

It's still at an early stage, but remember that HD-DVD did some combos with DVDs as well.

Ever want to beat up on Disney because they'd retired the old Pinocchio disk or Fantasia Anthology boxset before you could get it, and now you have to pay $150 on eBay?

...Yeah. Now imagine you're one of either those timid or stingy mainstream chickens who hasn't gotten their Blu-ray player yet, by the time "Sleeping Beauty"'s already gone back into the vault.

Disney's been through this before. They know Customer Disgruntlement.

Disney is just including a DVD copy inside the BD case... Nothing compared to the crap HD DVD pulled by removing disc art to store the DVD on the same disc... As long as they don't charge an extra $5 for it like HD DVD did I could care less... I know a lot of people that still buy DVDs, so it will not be hard to give it away...

Oh of course, I wasn't implying they were on the same level of cleverness, I just mean that the old/new format combos have existed before.

Actually this is a wonderful deal for parents. This allows you to let the kids have the DVD to play whenever they want, take it in the car for the road trips and yet you still have your pristine BD in the case when its family viewing night.

Exactly. And this is exactly the reason it's being done.

This is Disneys way of helping out blu ray buyers with kids. They know most people who own Blu-ray players only own 1 & moved the standard DVD player to the kids room. Now instead of letting their rugrats get their sticky fingers all over the BD copy as they use it for a frisbee and scratch it all up b4 they shove it into the player upside down, they can hand over the DVD copy and keep the one that really matters nice and kid free. Makes sense to me for family/kids movies.....as long as they don't charge more, and from what I've heard, they dont plan on increasing the cost.

I can give the DVD to my son while keeping the
dvd for myself. A great idea.

Yeah this is about an non-confusing as possible. If I hadn't already upgraded to Blu, I would definitely have been taking advantage of this type of stuff. That way I could still watch the new movie I buy, but when I did get the Blu Ray player, I wouldn't have to buy the movie again.

It doesn't matter for me now, but I would have loved other studios to do this before.

I like what Disney is doing. It's making customers consider buying the two packs, so they'll consider buying a Blu-Ray player. The customer also won't have to rebuy the movie when they do go Blu.

Of course we won't like it, since we already have Blu-Ray players but remember, not everyone rushed out to get it once the format war ended.

I think it is a wonderful idea.... When the grandkids come to visit, if they want to watch it, we have a play room for them with a dvd player. The DVD is for them to enjoy anytime they want.... The Blu is for the Theatre room so they can watch it with Grandpa.

Not all their releases will come with a DVD, but most of the big ones will. I think they're warming up the market to eventually only providing one release with both Blu-ray and DVD (no separate DVD release). Disney can pull that off.

I cannot see buying the BD for oneself and then having to buy the DVD separately for the kids for these animated films we know they are interested in. This combo is much more affordable!

Not all the movies, right now I'm told they are focusing on Family oriented movies only.

Fox is actually following them as well. Begining with Marley and Me, it includes a DVD as well. Then another will be Bride Wars.

A Fox rep has informed me that they plan to try and put something in each of their releases to increase it's value so it will spur Blu-ray sales. They DON'T want to reduce the price of Blu-ray....they like the high prices. The only way to convince people to buy overpriced movies is add content to them (according to them anyways). That's why you may see DVD movies included in a lot of releases going forward (heck even Day Earth Stood Still comes with a free copy of the old movie).

this is ok by me. this way my daughter won't have to handle my blu copy, she'll have her own she can put in the player herself.

she'd 3 and likes to be independant.

This will piss off the DVD devotees. They don't want to spend the extra on a disc they will not use. Doesn't matter if they eventually will, if they think so or not, that is how people are.

HD DVD tried it and the flack caused them to change their tune. I can see if this is a packaging option, but the only option? You are not above the wrath of the retail buyer just because your name is "Disney".
