Does the PS3 upscale regular dvds over component video? - Blu-ray Forum

I have a friend who is looking to get a blu ray player, and I want to suggest the PS3, but was wondering if it will upscale dvd's over component since they don't have HDMI. Also, the PS3 will output blu ray in 720p over component as well right?

Though the PS3 does up convert dvd I think it requires HDMI. I am going to double check to make sure that is true.

I too am pretty sure it only upscales via HDMI, but it will output at least 720p from a blu ray over component video right?

The PS3 will output Blu-rays at any resolution, including as low as 480i. Unfortunately the PS3 will not upconvert dvds over component cables, only via HDMI. This is not a limitation of the PS3 but it is imposed on all dvd manufacturers by the Hollywood studios. The only dvd players that will upconvert over component connections are hacked players.

You may need to double check but from my understanding all upscaling DVD players have to use hdmi for upscaling. The DVD spec forbids upscaling over over analog component.

I have a PS3 hooked up with component out, and I can definitively say, "yes, it does upscale DVDs over this connection", but only non-copyrighted DVDs. Therefore, you'd have to back up commercial DVDs to remove the copyright flag and encryption before it will upscale them.

Secondly, yes, the PS3 does display both 720p and 1080i signals over component video output--but obviously you need the special component output cable (doesn't come with one).

Please remember to be realistic in the whole upconversion thing. It is a DVD and no matter how much magic dust you put on a DVD player it is still that....a DVD player. You are dealing with source material in DVD format. You are not going to get a HD picture from a DVD source no mater how you cut it. Please keep that in mind when you watch.
