Question ALL EXPERTS: Regular DVDs playing in letterbox (PS3)

To all experts:
I have connected my PS3 using the HDMI output. BD plays fine on the TV - filling out the 16:9 display. However, regular WS DVDs display in letterbox when playing through HDMI. Component video with TV set to 16:9 works fine.

Is there a workaround?

Thnx.

Did you check the DVD itself, namely on the back of the DVD box? Make sure it says Widescreen 1.85:1 or something along that effect. if it says 2.35:1 ratio then it will have black bars on top.

If that doesn't work I dunno what may be the problem.

Read these 2 threads, specially the last post from the second link, and see if that helps resolve it:

PS3 and scaling

any way to "zoom in" on the movies?

Thank you. One of the posts in the first link answered my question:
i.e. we'll have to wait for a firmware update in Mar '07 to get upconversion and "full" screen from widescreen standard DVDs.

I watched Sin City last night, SD-DVD and I got full screen widescreen from it.

Not to get into already heavily charted territory here, but what's the point of zooming in? That's the same thing as taking a 2.35 image and making it 4:3. You're just cutting off the sides again and defeating the purpose of the OAR (Original Aspect Ratio). There's a reason the director filmed the movie that way and a reason he'd like to keep it presented in that ratio. If you're zooming in anyway, then you might as well not even have a 16:9 TV.
