Default Does anyone else have problems reading regular DVDs?

My old Blu-Ray Player was my PS3 which failed completely 1 month out of warranty.

My current player is a Panasonic BD-35.

Both have had issues reading regular DVDs with slight smudges or scratches. My Panasonic HD-DVD player reads the same discs flawlessly.

Is this a common problem because of the type of laser used in Blu-Ray players making it more sensitive to scratches?
