Thumbs up Another week, another record for Blu-ray.

Great job Sony and all the BDA team.

Another week, another record for Blu-ray on the Nielsen VideoScan charts courtesy of Home Media Magazine. The big news here is that after the holidays Blu-ray seems to be getting stronger and stronger when you compare the amount of money spent vs DVD.

The news is a little old, as there has been another week since then (14%). But, progress is definitely showing. Especially a format that was predicted to be completely killed off by digital downloads this holiday season by many.

I have some friends that are getting BD that previously didn't want to because they thought it wasn't popular enough. The simple fact is that many people don't base their purchasing decisions on whether they personally like it or not. The social psychology plays a big part. Unlike many of us early adopters, many don't want to stand out in the crowd and be jeered at (many of us first BD owners were) for being an early adopter.

That's why I always said 10% is the mark a tech needs to make before it starts accelerating on it's own. That appears to be what is happening with Blu-ray.

What do you guys think the average market share will be at the end of this year? A steady 20%? 25%?

I say big numbers. Wolverine, Harry Potter and Transformers 2 will be out by the end of the year so it'll be big.

I'm thinking and hoping for a steady 20% on the second half of the year.

I completely disagree. I'd like to think I speak for the large majority of people who waited this long when I say - I waited because I didn't want to end up with the obsolete player (HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray). Once the winner was clear & rental media was available (I'm a 98% renter/2% buyer), the only thing left was to convince the wife.

Social psychology? Nope. 'Sanding out in the crowd' had jack to do with it. Fear of ending up with this generation's Betamax had everything to do with it.

I dare to say that it may be as high as 30% by the end of the year.

Are you thinking about the avarage for 2009 or just the last weeks of 2009.
The latter is possible, the first i think its very optimistic.

I would estimate that the weekly numbers will likely be exceeding 30% by the fourth quarter of this year. The overall numbers for the year will be closer to 25% though.

For 2008, Blu Ray had 3.3% share in terms of revenue (sales+rental)

http://www.dvdinformation.com/News/p...009yearEnd.htm

Roughly tripling that (say 10-12%) for 2009 would seem a reasonable target.

Blu-ray is growing faster than anyone expected in this down economy. I notice everytime I am at Best Buy I see lots of people picking up BD and BD players. Has anyone else noticed this while shopping. Most of the time I see more people in the BD section than the DVD - lol. I think people are willing to pay up for BD if the quality is there.

I'm thinking of the weekly average of some week close to the end of 2009.

I think the real issue is many of the folks who did better during this past decade are not all broke. Right or wrong that's just how it is. Since they have more money they're also going to be more likely to enjoy some of the "finer things" like Blu-ray. Right or wrong, those folks are less likely to lose their jobs.

Not to be off-putting, but there is no shortage of folks in the "I'm sticking with DVD" camp that are also worried about keeping their jobs. Going out and buying movies on DVD is now seen as a luxury, even if the DVDs are dirt cheap.

Retailers like Best Buy are still hurting even if there is a noticeable jump in the number of people buying Blu-ray players and movies.
