Default Audio Question

Guys for example. My DVD Player can only decode DTS and Dolby Digital. Then I play a The Lord of the Rings I with an audio of Dolby Digital EX 5.1. Will it be able to Dolby Digital EX or it will just be Dolby Digital 5.1 because there's no EX decoder on my DVD.

How is your DVD player hooked up to your receiver? If it is using digital then it is the receiver being able to decode it that you need to worry about. If you are running 6 analog cables from DVD player to receiver and you say your DVD player can't decode EX then you can't choose that setting or you will hear nothing.

unless you are running a reciever there will only be stereo sound(possibly simulated surround sound depending on the tv that you have) coming from your speakers. 5.1 surround sound refers to the front left/right speakers that carry sound effects in front of you, a center channel for the dialogue, and rear left/right speakers which finish off sound effects behind you. the .1 is the subwoofer(aka LFE) which transmits bass or low frequency from the source. without a reciever this becomes impossibe. so stick with the regular audio tracks, until you get a reciever of course. if you have questions on different models ask away, as you can get alot of great info from the people on this forum.

My Sony DVD Player has 5.1 Channel Surround Output. And I have the speakers and subwoofer connected propely. But on the player, it only has the logo DTS and Dolby Digital Surround. There's no Dolby Digital EX Logo indicated.

Just curious, is this a HTIB system? Is what you are calling a DVD player a complete home theater in a box combo unit? I don't know enough about the codec stuff to answer your question but you probably need to give some more details about your system for the more knowledged people to understand the real issues you are facing.

Model Number? Or any name/numbers on the "DVD Player" you speak of?

Yeah I think it's an HTIB. Uhm I'll post the number late. Gotta go to school.

Not an expert on this, but from what I can tell with what you have it will be in Dolby Digital 5.1.

For whatever reason, only Dolby Prologic 2 is listed.

It's under the specifications tab. Not sure why they would only list Dolby Pro Logic II under features.

I watched LOTR Trilogy on that player which has an audio of DD EX 5.1 and I was able to hear the audio. Also it was on 5.1 channels. But what's the purpose of that "EX"? What does it add?

EX for Dolby Digital adds a center back channel. It's a matrixed system and not discrete like the rest of the 5.1 channels. Your HTiB can't do it so the EX flag will be ignored.

ES Discrete for DTS also adds the center back but it's a discrete system, meaning that it is true 6.1. Again, your HTiB can't do it so the ES flag will be ignored as well.

In both cases where you are listening to either DD ES or DTS EX, you will only get 5.1. And if you get a Blu-ray player, you'd need to get a new sound system because your HTiB does not have optical or HDMI input.

In November 2001, Dolby Laboratories began to license the Dolby Digital EX (jointly developed by Lucasfilm’s THX division and Dolby Laboratories.) Shortly afterwards, DTS introduced DTS-ES. Both Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES introduced a new surround back channel. However, the information in the back channel (either one or two speakers) was encoded into the surround left and surround right channels (similar to the way the center channel is encoded for Dolby Pro-Logic). The extended surround formats are fully backward compatible.

Because the surround back channel is not a discrete channel, the correct way to refer to these two formats is “Dolby Digital 5.1 EX Matrix” and “DTS 5.1 ES Matrix”. It would be misleading to refer to them as 6.1-channel or 7.1-channel formats.

DTS-ES optionally supports a discrete full-bandwidth surround back channel, independent from the surround left and surround right channels. This is called DTS-ES Discrete 6.1.
