Will the first ever Sony Blu-Ray finally be released ?

I'm still wondering --

The original, first authored Sony Blu-Ray, that is. I won't consider the format maturing until it's finally available.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) president Benjamin S. Feingold today announced that authoring has been completed on the first Blu-ray Disc (BD) to contain a full-length, high-definition feature film. Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle was compressed and authored in MPEG 2 full high-definition (1920 x 1080) by Sony Pictures' Digital Authoring Center (DAC) and is now being shipped to BD hardware companies for player testing.

Utilizing Blu-ray's unprecedented storage capacity, the Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle disc features dynamic menus with full resolution graphics and animation, superior audio and unparalleled picture quality. "We are confident this achievement will help everyone understand that Blu-ray is real and poised to enter the marketplace," said Mr. Feingold. "Blu-ray will bring the highest quality HD experience possible to the home."

"We are extremely proud to deliver on the promise of Blu-ray. This is an important step for our industry in order to begin mass production of high-definition movies in the Blu-ray format in the near future," said Don Eklund, Senior Vice President, Advanced Technologies, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

"Sony Pictures authoring tools, together with our unmatched expertise, have made the first Blu-ray Disc a reality and we are thrilled to ship this prototype disc to BD hardware manufacturers for testing," said James Mercs Senior Vice President and General Manager, Digital Authoring Center, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

That was over three years ago. This release never happened. Of course, if it ever comes out, it will have to be BD-50 with AVC or VC1 endoding, holding the two versions of the movie (the PG-13 & the R one) on one disc.

Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle was simply a bad movie, save for the simple fact that it had Demi Moore in her sexiest role since Striptease! If anything, I'd rather have the first Charlie's Angels on Blu-ray!

It is odd that they would choose Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle as their first Blu-ray since it was largely a critical and commercial disappointment, but it's even odder that they likely have the disc finished and ready but haven't released it.
Another movie to throw into the "When will it be released" discussion is Bad Boys 2. It was in the very first Blu-ray promo I ever saw and said coming soon and that was probably in 2007, yet still no real word on when it's coming. Wedding Crashers was on the same promo though, and it didn't come out for almost 2 years after that.

This movie was heavily featured in all Blu-ray promotional advertising when the format launched. At this point I am sure it has been scuttled.

Um, I'd rather it did not come out. Terrible movie IMO.

I love bad movies. You have to watch bad movies in glorious 1080p just to appreciate more the good ones. If all you watch is good movies, after a while, you don't realise their value. You need to walk on the dark end of the streets sometimes.
