Gotta say Nirvana.

Not that I cared for them. But they didn't put grunge on the map, they made the damn map.

Dude, way to reach into the 1990s barrel and pull out a couple gems! L7 is a totally lost band; I wonder what happened to them. I was really into Soundgarden back in the day, although looking back on it they were one of the more commercialized of the grunge bands. I'd almost classify them more as alternative than grunge, but I guess music genres aren't that strict anyway. Regardless, both great bands in their day.

Good points above, Nirvanna...I focused on the Your Favorite Grunge band part of the OP, instead of the thread title...

yes i love Nirvana, and they did put it on the map, but Alice in Chains clearly was the "true" grunge band

Well, they SAS are not my favorite...but when it comes to the genre being commercially successfull the line starts right behind "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

As for my favorite, I'll take Blind Melon.

I'm not into Grunge Bands, but I'd like a question answered. Was Neil Young the one who introduced everyone that that format? It's what I heard and just want to know if that's true or not. If not, where is the origin?

Once grunge happened ($$$$$)they paid tribute to the dude that didn't shower and said that he was the "Godfather of Grunge".

Neil does look rather disheveled most of the time.

Although you can't deny the staying power of AIC, you still have to harken back to the beginning to find one of the very best: Mother Love Bone

I don't say this too lightly as I was living in Seattle when the grunge movement broke and I never wanted a genre to die so badly. You couldn't take a step without hearing Soundgarden, STP, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, or Bush. To this day I can't listen to any but the first two I mentioned.

Alice in Chains was metal all the way. Just because grunge was in at the time they were called that.

RRRRRRRRR! Soundgarden and collective Soul too... give me a break... they were ROCK/METAL!

So what is the "grunge" sound? And how would I recognize it?

Good question... it was a money making term by the early to mid 90s... everyone was Grunge who weren't haha.

If a band came out today that sounded like Alice in Chains they would be classified as Hard Rock and Metal. Because thats what they are.... very talented metal band at that!!!

It seems you had to be from the Seattle (NW) area, wear plaid or pretty "grungy" clothes and play rock music during the early 90's = grunge? Anyway, AIC was the bomb....but how about Mother Love Bone? Another great group with a tragic ending......this group was just getting hot when their lead passed on.....really was a shame.
