Default Coen Brothers remaking John Wayne's "True Grit"

Quote:
As their next film, Joel and Ethan Coen will put their spin on "True Grit," the iconic Western that won John Wayne an Oscar.

Not a traditional remake, the Paramount film will be more faithful to the Charles Portis book than the 1969 pic, also distributed by Par.

Portis' novel is about a 14-year-old girl who, along with an aging U.S. marshal and another lawman, tracks her father's killer in hostile Indian territory.

But while the original film was a showcase for Wayne, the Coens' version will tell the tale from the girl's p.o.v.
Source: Variety

If anyone could do this I'd say it's the Coens, but I'm curious to see who they get to play John Wayne's character (even if it isn't told from his point of view)...

Hmm... I'm a pretty big John Wayne fan (they just don't make 'em like him anymore), and I actually just DVR'd True Grit off of TCM last week. But I gotta say, I'm actually very interested in this. I'd love to see the Coens tackle this story. I'm sure it will be very very different than the Wayne classic. And besides, good Westerns are hard to come by these days. I'm up for any talented film makers tackling the genre.

Now that is interesting, he might be the only one to pull it off.

I'd bet Tommy Lee Jones could do the role justice -- especially since he is from Texas and obviously already has years of experience riding horses. Plus, he's worked with the Coens' before and they know each other. Or maybe Josh Brolin might work.

Agreed, Tommy Lee Jones as the personality to make it happen as well.

I was going to come in and say the same thing -- I totally see Tommy Lee Jones in this role, and he might be the only one to do it justice.

Obviously Eastwood is an amazing talent, but he might be a little "too" old to do this, and not sure how he'd work with the Coens.

At least this remake will be in good hands and sounds like the route they're taking will help distinguish it from the original and people won't compare them but instead let each film stand on it's own merits.

Some interesting choices and I'd like to add Daniel Day Lewis to the list of possiblities.

I think Four Brothers with Mark Whalberg is sort of a remake of The Sons Of Katie Elder???

One should not remake the Duke's movie! Remember that Coen Bros.disaster remake of The Ladykillers, you cant relplace Peter Sellers and Sir Alec Guinness! The Coen's need to make more films like The Big Labowski(need the Blu please,Universal!)

NOOOOO!!!!

He was good I guess in There Will Be Blood. Personally I thought the whole movie was an audition tape for WATCH ME OVER-ACT and watch the acclaim role in. Blah blah blah. He's a good actor but To ME, I just didn't enjoy his role or all the OMG, What a Great Acting Job!!, b.s. that he got for it. That said, DDL in a Western playing the character that John Wayne made an Icon out of? HEEELLLL to the NOOO as the young kids say.

The Perfect guy to me, and obviously many others here agree so far, is Tommy Lee Jones. Has that craggy old fart routine down pat, is a rancher, lives on a ranch, all noted above, & would command the respect if they do in fact do this movie, focusing more on the 14-yr old girl's POV.

DDL is too slight of build. He certainly has the talent, but we need a larger/taller guy.
