Default Does anyone else not tip when they eat?

I tip 20-30% if the service is great, sometimes 50% if the service is outstanding.

If it is the person going through the motions, or I am left waiting for water or something, or worse, the waiter is not overtly nice (I dont care what his/her day was like, and I dont care how busy it is, because I am paying money for service), regardless of how busy it is, they dont get a tip.

My reasoning is, I am not going to reward someone for merely being adequate. There are thousands of low paying (often under minimum wage) jobs where an outstanding job only keeps you from getting fired, why would I give my hard earned money to away to someone who just shows up to work? (I also understand that many places pool tips, and that part pisses me off more).

It irritates me because most people I know tip horrible waiters 10-15% and the best waiters 15%... That is ridiculous. Only one other person I know tips for service, and not for the social norm. There is no other industry where it is seen as abnormal to not tip after bad encounter. I cant say how many times I have seen people have a horrible time, complain, get water poured in their lap, and then leave a damn tip.

Rant off.

I think 20-30% is pretty dang good for average to good service, and most would at least somewhat agree with that. Fifty-percent tip is not cheap.

I agree oak, bad service does not warrant a good tip.

I think I tip too often. Also, are us supposed to tip AAA guys when they tow your car or the cable installer?

I don't know all the rules for things like that.

We always tip some no matter what. It does irritate the crap outta me though how everyone thinks "oh you HAVE to leave 10-15%:. This is BS. My wife makes me so mad when we have someone who is just terrible, I mean flat out terrible and she still wants to leave them alot. I'm like leave a freakin dollar, they sucked. You have to be insanely terrible for me to be like that but it happens at places way more often than it should. I think nowadays the waiters/waitresses know they are gonna get a decent tip no matter what due to this BS tip policy that seems to be some unwritten freakin law or something so they don't go outta there way at all.

Yes but you do realize most wait staff work for like $2 an hour and when someone walks out on a check, it comes out of their pay, right? I don't always tip generously but I do tip because I know their pay is crappy and they have to put up with a lot of crap in their line of work.

+1 just what i was going to say. waiters/waitresses don't get regular hourly wage and if i get someone that's especially awesome i generally tip a lot more than is "suggested"

I can't even recall the last time I had such a bad experience at a restaurant to the extent where I wouldn't want to tip them at all. I'm sure it's happened but it's been a while.

I would guess we eat out about 3 to 4 times a week at a proper sit down place but I tip delivery drivers as well.

sometimes I see tipping as a way to put a smile on someone's face

I always leave a $4-5 tip when I eat. Even at the Chinese buffets.

Thats not our fault, thats just some underwritten law that says "hey our employeer can get away with paying us $2" This is bullshit, they should be paid standard wages and get tips based on there performance, not "tip because they cant make rent"

It's a weakness I have I guess

I tip. Sometimes I even tip curbside takeaway or certain fast food joints with tip jars. That's only sometimes, though, and it's only a dollar or two.
