How much should I tip a valet?

I am taking my girlfriend out to dinner on Tuesday for her birthday. The restaurant we are going to, Nakama Japanese Steak House, offers valet parking because it's location does not have any public parking lots or garages near it.

I know I should tip the valet, but how much should I tip him/her?

When should I tip them? When I arrive at the restaurant or when the valet returns my car at the end of the evening?

Tip after dinner when you are leaving.For valet parking I usually tip between 3-5 dollars..

I wouldn't tip him. The restaurant bill is expensive enough, It's the restaurant's responsibility to pay their employees.

This man knows how it's done. Of course don't do this automatically , gauge how nice they were and how your car looks like when you pick it up.

I would tip after and when you get in your car, do a quick walk around. If you car is RWD, come in from the rear. FWD from the front. AWD from the rear. I would check to see if there's rubber on the side of the car and if the tires have been spinning. Really check if your car is a performance car. If they have speak to there manager, because they do this allot. If all looks good give them $3-5.

That's exactly what I do, or rather what I do not !
I can eat three days (morning, noon and evening) with the price of one evening at a restaurant. And the day I decide to waste my money in a restaurant and tip the waitress to boot is the day she looks very hot and agrees to come spend the night to my place ...

Two bucks when you hand the car off and Two bucks when you get it back.

That way if the valet person likes to have fun with cars he'll won't even think about taking out his problems with yours.

Well, it depends.

If it's BUSY and there's an actual parking lot and this guy has a lot to do then maybe 3 bucks.

If it's like some places in LA where there's 8 spaces and STILL a valet then I don't give him anything. There's NO need to have a guy park my car when there's 8 spaces. I can CLEARLY see where to park and the 12 feet of walking I'd have to do WONT kill me.
