Default Marvel Studios will start using it's own group of writers

Quote:
Marvel Studios is looking for a few good screenwriters.

Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that Marvel has established a writers program to build an in-house stable of screenwriters to work on their comic book movies. "The goal is to put more than half a dozen film writers on staff, give them an office, and 'work them like horses!'," according to DHD's source.

Marvel's comic book writers are not excluded from the program.

The site's source adds: "'Before the writers are even allowed to come in and meet, they must sign a non-disclosure agreement and a 70-page, non-negotiable contract. Among other things, the contract gives Marvel ownership over everything the writers create during the one year term of [the] deal, plus a first look and last refusal to any and all projects the writers have previously written or will write for 24 months in the future.'"
Source: IGN

Sounds pretty intense, but understandably so. Do you think this is a good move for Marvel, to use repeat writers on their comic book movies? I guess the work quality and reputation of the writer will be a major factor.

Good for Marvel, not so good for an independent writer who knows what they're talking about.

If, they were to perhaps USE the writers outside of Marvel but have the Marvel writers have final approval then yes it'd be awesome.

Not a bad idea I think. Marvel as been giving us some pretty good movies in recent times, this could continue this string of good movies.

I think this could be very good for any of the upcoming Marvel movies, because you can see how well the movies were made once Marvel took over the production.

I can see both good and bad in this. The good, that MARVEL will be able to control what they write and will probably pull from the source material more often, which will diminish the chance of certain inaccuracies from MARVEL movies. The bad, the writers material might get a little stale after a while. MARVEL will have to keep replenishing the stock. Plus, independent writers lose out big time.

Variety reported that Marvel is working on the following movies in tandem with this new project:

Encouraged by the massive box office success of Iron Man, Marvel Entertainment wants to hire a group of writers to work on film scripts for other lesser-known properties, such as Black Panther, Cable, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Nighthawk and Vision

If "ownership" means that the scripts cannot be sold by the writer as his own AND that Marvel still pays the writer royalties for what comes out of the scripts, I think it's a good idea. If it's about paying a monthly paycheck, not so much.

The FLLR deal is a bit forceful since Marvel is all about comics and the writer may not write any future scripts that are comic-book like.

I've always wondered why they didn't use the writers of the comics more. This way they would get people that already know and understand the characters and what kind of situations they would be best in. This way you don't get completely neutered characters, and huge age disparities in them. Yes, I am looking at you X-Men for what you did to Rogue and the rest of the X-kiddies.

I am giuessing two BIG reasons

1) writing a comic and a movie are totally different
2) you want to go beyond the comic, you want to entice all the population and not limit yourself to a market which is as small as the comic reader for that particular hero. You want someone that does not know all the ins and outs because he will be better at showing them in the movie.

Movie executives that run the studios and have a huge influence on the final movie, including Marvel's movies, do not trust untested comic book writers to write movie scripts for a general audience. Studios believe the core fanboy audience is not big enough to have a blockbuster movie. That is why we get abominations like the first Fantastic Four movie.

I thought the second one was a little better. They at least got Silver Surfer's character and look right.
