Default Marvel Studios = No R-Rated Films?

Too bad as there are a few characters from the Marvel universe that I think would benefit from an R-rating.

I personally think our ratings system is a farce. I learned that last summer when i took my kids to see POTC 3 (which sucked). Within 5 minutes someone had a bullet hole in their forehead. Even PG movies get away with cussing and middle fingers and the like.

All three "Blade" films and, yes, "The Punisher" were R-rated endeavors... however, it sounds like the latter may very well be the last time a Marvel character comes out swinging with a more strictly adult-oriented tone (the upcoming second "Punisher" film may very well get trimmed to a PG-13).

If you haven't seen it already, check out the 2006 documentary "This Film is Not Yet Rated" on DVD.

I think Iron Man is the first movie solely produced by Marvel Studios, so those and the Punisher don't count. The article even references R-rated movies possibly being done in conjunction with other studios.

Ah, but that wasn't an "official" Marvel film...That was the One That Got Away at Lionsgate.

Marvel Studios is not going to make any R films. Other studios, such as the ones that made Blade and Punisher and the upcoming Punisher sequel can do what they want.

Iron Man is the first Marvel Studios film. So the upcoming films that are made by them are not going to be anything above a PG-13. The other studios that still own the rights to other Marvel properties can make a R if they want, but I dont think any of them will make an R film other then maybe the Punisher film. I believe Fox still owns the rights to X-Men and the X characters that were in the 3 films. And Columbia(Sony) owns Spiderman. So the Spidey films and new X films and spin-offs could be R rated if the studios wanted to. But I doubt that.

And although Venom was in Spidey 3, he is not owned by Columbia (from what I heard.) So I think Venom would be a Marvel Studios film if they wanted to do a Venom movie. Unless they optioned out the film to another studio.

I didn't figure they would, but a good edgy series wouldn't be bad...such as Daredevil or Punisher in the Spawn/HBO vein...if not Ghost Rider, Deathlok, Moon Knight...there are several "edgy" or "darker" titles that could benefit.

I hope Marvel never does a mainstrem character as Rated R. Yes, you could make a Captain America where the Red Skull does overly evil and vile things on the screen to get an R rating, but 'comics' are supposed to be about the kids. I want my kids to enjoy a movie as much as I do - which Iron Man did a great job of working within its rating.

you forgot something else, all 3 blade movies got an R rating too.

but still i believe some characters that enjoy a dark personality profile such as blade and punisher should continue to be in the category of R Rated. it benefit the film and the story. Why would marvel do such a thing. it is all about moolah.....$$$

It's not just about the money, it's also about the target audience and keeping films close to the comic books the way the artists intended it. The comic book fan base is not the R rated audience.

your way of looking at it, is nothing but innocent. not that i have any problem with the way you look at it. and i have to say that i have see way too many PG13 movies that are awesome, but studios really tend to prefer to make PG13 titles than R because they want to profit from it more. Kill Bill is a great example. although it wasn't PG13, at first the MPAA gave it an NC17 rating, because of the amount of violence in it, then Quentin was forced to edit the film to carry a wider audiance and bring in the profit.

An R-rated HULK would be messy. So much red and green on the screen .
