Default Onkyo 706 Volume problems

Volume question -- my volume seemed quite low when watching a few things last nite after connecting my 706 -- I tried out the 1st Osprey flying scene/attack at th Katar base -- in "Transformers" - With my 505 the other nite when I 1st got my T90e's, the volume was 52-56, a decent Loud volume. With the 706 last nite, I had to have it near 70 or a bit more to get Near the same volume. I talked w/"Forsberg21" and he asked what my DB levels were, and I remember they were all at 0 (I obviously forgot to set them last nite after doing all my Set-ups)

Since we have almost the Same set-up, I asked what his Db Levels were at; his Center was at +7, L/R Fronts were +2, Surr L/R at +7. Not sure what his Sub is at -- but I have it at 0 for now. Should my Sub be higher than O? So after setting my speakers up from "0" , the Volume again didn't seem HIGH enough, whether it was for TV viewing or a DVD - I Just got finished watching the same OSPREY scene and a couple other action ones, and I had to have the volume up to the mid 60's to 70 (?!!?) to get Near the Volume I had with my 505.

Is something wrong? HELP!

** (NOTE: Feel free to answer here or PM me, whatever works - & Thanks in Advance!) **

I Pm'd you, but I'll state the same thing here for add'l discussion. Anyway, from the problems you are saying about getting the volume to what seems "correct" to you, I will restate and reinforce what i have read often here.....get an SPL Meter. This might help you tremendously from all accounts.

The SPL meter will certainly help you get consistent sound, but i don't know if it will help you with your master volume issue. Back when I had my 605, I would watch movies at 65 fairly regularly, sometimes higher. As long as your AVR isn't overheating, this really shouldn't be a problem. Clearly you don't want to watch it near 98 (max)...but those levels were always normal for me

my unit before the 605 was another onkyo.. it was typically around 35-40. never had a single issue with overheating or distortion on the 605

Ok, thanks, I'll try that as well. It was at 0, but I put it up to +6db. I'll look at the manual but does that Boost up the overall Volume levels? Thx.

I've been told that it justs makes equal the volume for each input, but it really seemed to make everything i watch punchier and louder.I think its an ongoing debate though.

It does seem to have done what you write above, so it may be that we're on the right track. The manual says, "with Intellivolume, you can set the input level for each input selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others."
