United Kingdom Home Cinema Help!!!

Hi guys, im a new member to the forum and am struggling with a question. I have an InFocus IN72 HD ready projector, a KEF 3005 speaker system running through a Yamaha Amp. I only have a cheap Philips DVD player at the moment and I'm thinking about upgrading to a BlueRay player. I am fancying a Sony BDP 550, would this be a good choice or would you guys suggest something else. Thanks for looking and it would be great if you could give me some advice

Default OPPO Digital 83

I was planning on getting the Panasonic BD80 but now think I'll wait for the new OPPO Digital 83. It is about the same price range of about $500 US and seems like it will have the best blu ray specifications along with their impressive DVD playback that made their players so popular with enthusiasts.

Assuming that your projector has HDMI, the Sony would be a fine choice for a Blu-Ray player.

You might want to consider the Sony PS3 also, especially if it's around the same money as the Sony 550. It functions as much more than a game console or BD player. It can play music from any source on your network. It can also store music, video and photos on its hard drive.

It will work well whether or not your Yamaha receiver has HDMI. Of course, HDMI is best, but I'm using an older NAD Receiver for 5.1. I run video HDMI to my projector straight from the PS3 and audio through digital optical to the receiver.

If you consider a PS3, buy the extra remote for $20 and it will control it just like a standard player.

United Kingdom Thanks for the advice

Hi guys, thanks for your advice the yamaha amp is a DSP-AX759SE, it is not hdmi so i would have to connect the projector straight to the dvd player. I have considered a PS3 but was told that the blue ray player will not be as good as other players such as the s550, i have also been looking at the samsung BD-P4600, of the 2 which would you guys go for. Also i cant really wait as it will be a present off my girlfriend for my birthday which is in 3weeks. Any comments or ideas would be appriciated. Thanks

It looks like your AVR has multi-channel analog inputs. If you want HD audio you need to get a BD player with analog outs. Might be something to consider when getting one. Unless you plan on upgrading your AVR anytime soon. The PS3 doesn't have them...and I'm not really sure which Blu-ray players do.

I have a PS3 for my Blu-ray player and love it. I control it with my Harmony 880 via the Nyko usb dongle (It does everything but turn it on/off). Logitech is going to release a IR/Bluetooth converter soon which will allow full control the PS3 via Harmony remotes. I also use the PS3 to listen to music and look at pics from my PC via TVersity software (free). I do wish the PS3 could bitstream HD audio...

HD audio will make a big difference. However, if you get a Blu-Ray player with 7.1 channel analog outputs, you can get great HD audio with your current Yamaha. Read through the following link for all the details:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=17648

The Sony BDP-550 would be an ideal player considering your current setup. It will decode both Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-MA tracks and transmit them, along with uncompressed linear PCM via 7.1 analog outs to your receiver. That's all you need to enjoy the best sound possible. Your receiver is a good 7.1 channel receiver, so it will work great for now.
