Default Universal HD???

I'm not sure if this is the exact place to post this thread, but it's as close as I could come! Very simply,I'd like to know if the general membership here ever sees a day, when you turn on your TV,and no matter what channel happens to be on,it will be HDTV. I currently recieve in the neighborhood of 40 premium (mostly movie) channels, and out of all of them, only about 6 or 7 are "full time" HD....Seems like a terrible waste to me!! As I'm sure everyone knows, once you see HDTV (let alone Blu ray!) it kind of spoils you for anything less!!

I think it will come down to whomever you HD provider is (if it's Comcrap, it will never happen in my opinion), and whomever can be the first to get enough bandwith space to do it. That could be a very long time for sure......

I think it's going to take a while unfortunately. And they're still going to bone you for years after that because you can't just get hd channels. You have to buy them in sd and pay the hd fee. I hope at least that most of you here don't have cox cable. It's literally the worst cable company... Ever

HDTV on all channels all the time? i'd bet on never.
i currently get 20 HD channels, but much of the programming is only SD.

shows like Seinfeld, Cheers, or MASH will be on TV for decades just like I Love Lucy is on now, yet many such shows simply don't have an HD source and thus will always be SD.

It will be a while as long as consumers only have a few providers to chose from, for me I,m forced to go with Time Warner crap, unless I want a dish and I have played that dish game before.

TWC is only 720P, and their packages are crap to say the least,
each bundle of the HBO,s and Showtimes, has only 1 full time HD channel,
the rest are SD.

We are going to be stuck with standard-definition programming for many years. Too many shows have their native resolution at sd and networks are too cheap to convert all their cameras to being HD-capable.

I wish I could cancel my sd programming and keep the hd. Everything I watch is in hd already including the 10oclock local news.

It's easier for satellite providers to increase capacity for HD channels, since all they have to do is throw another satellite in orbit. DirecTV launched a satellite a few months ago that gave them capacity for 150 HD channels and they are going to launch another satellite in 2009, bringing their capacity to 200 HD channels

Cable providers have a bit of a problem, though. They can only improve their capacity by using existing coax cable, so they have to come up with little tricks like getting rid of analog channels, only sending channels that are being watched or upgrading to higher speed cable as they do maintenance. They can't tear up the whole network at once and disrupt everybody so it is a very slow process.

So if you have satellite, then I would expect all programming to be in HD alot sooner than cable, that's for sure.

I have a problem with paying 9 bucks a month for the "HD Plus Package" when of the 30 channels that gets me, TSNHD, HDNET and Discovery HD are the only 3 that are HD 24-7.

Ya, the other channels have some HD programming but maybe 1/4 of the broadcasts!

That's garbage!

P.S. For you Canadian posters...who is CBC trying to kid with that pathetic excuse for HD!?

Outside of the main channels ABC, NBC and FOX I only watch SpikeTV for more UFC in HD and HDnet for Inside MMA for more mixed martial arts than I can shake a stick at!

I was trying to locate that but didn't see it listed so I thought I wasn't going to get to see Strikeforce, glad I will, thanks for the update! Be nice to see if they have a shot at being any kind of competition for UFC, but that isn't likely.

Agreed. Satellite will always be one step ahead of cable as far as what they can provide when it comes to programming, as the infrastructure of satellite is so much different from that of cable. Physical land line connections will give you better consistency and fewer dropouts as of the technology we have today, but I think in time you will see satellite improve in that area as well.

As far as HD programming goes, almost every channel I watch is broadcast in HD; this is especially true now that Comedy Central joined the mix. Still, though, as others have said: many shows only are only recorded in SD, so while the *channel* might be HD, its programming may not always be. This, too, will change in time, as HD cameras won't always be as expensive as they are now. There's notiing you can do about those old shows, though. They'll be locked in SD forever.

It's funny that you chose those particular four shows, as they were all shot on film and would absolutely benefit from an HD transfer, that is if somebody wanted to pony up the cash. Seinfeld is already available in HD in some markets (not mine, sadly) but others pop up all the time. I get Hogan's Heroes in HD now, for example.

Just about everthing will be dragged into the HD age eventually.
