Default Movies That Damaged Their Franchise

All this talk in the other thread about movies that SAVED their franchise, how about the reverse?

I'll get started...

Spiderman 3
Batman & Robin
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

spiderman 3 didn't destory the franchise. it made them more money than the last one and they're making another two films with the same cast and crew. that doesn't sound like something destroyed. spiderman 3 is not the worst movie made ok.

It's possible that a movie can make money but still destroy the spirit of the franchise (e.g., The Phantom Menace).

He never said it was "the worst movie made," and that's not the point of this thread.

Wow.

Star Trek Insurrection...pointless movie to make. Ruined the series for many fans that didn't even go see Nemesis, which, IMO was a great movie. It just flopped because of what the previous movie did.

i DEFINITELY don't think phantom menace destroyed star wars. certain elements of it tainted the movie (obvious as to what those are), but overall i didn't think it was a terrible movie. liam neeson and ewan mcgregor were great, darth maul was an awesome villain, and the music and actual plot were awesome imo. i'll repeat...imo

also, i don't think any movie can "destroy" the reputation of the previous ones, but in regards to affecting the way i would view an entire franchise--and not to bring this argument up again--indy 4 is definitely the weakest link in the chain for me for the indy franchise.

none of those make sense since all the movies after those still made tons of money and were successfull and all of those franchises are still alive accept maybe starwars.

It doesn't matter if it made money.

The two are NOT mutually exclusive.

i mean these are just people's opinions obviously. so to someone the BO profits may have a factor in whether a movie helped or hurt the overall franchise

Spiderman as a movie franchise was as hot as ever before Spiderman 3 came out, 9 out of 10 people you ask who saw it probably didn't enjoy it. Among my friends who love the genre and the first two movies, they told me to turn it off when it was on TV. From a quality perspective it's put doubt in peoples heads for the future movies.

I love how everyone states The Phantom Menace Ruined the Star Wars franchise and yet it is the fourth top grossing movie of all time. Obviously some people believed it was good for the movie to make that much. Maybe people take movies too seriously especially Star Wars and Star Trek films. I am sure Suissdo wil be in here crying about Crystal Skulls when American Psycho ruined the franchise after being an awful adaptation of a great book.

Can we say Ang Lee's Hulk? I know it wasn't made into a franchise, but Universal was planning on making it a triology.MARVEL had to actually reboot the franchise. If you allow this, then Dare Devil and Ghost Rider should be in the same boat. If not, then X-Men 3 was a bust, IMO.

Change the title of the thread to movies that ruined the franchise for you.
Both Spidey and starwars had movies after them. So they did not destroy the franchise. Both are still alive and kicking. Maybe lsot some fans because of the movie but clearly did not destroy the franchise.

Only 1 you have in there that destroyed the franchise would be batman and robin as it took 8 years for them to reboot the franchise and start over.

And as somebody pointed out about, Phantom Menace and the other new ones did well at the box office, but look at how highly praised the original trilogy was in the Star Wars community before 1998. Now look, "the original trilogy was good, but the new ones...", it's tainted the reputation of the franchise SOMEWHAT.

Perhaps "DESTROYED" wasn't the proper term to use, but come on, I can't even watch the first two Spidey movies now that they've gone back in #3 and changed the backstory about Ben/Sandman.

That is what i was going to say as well. Yes, Spiderman 3 made lots of money. I do not argue that it was successful from a $$$ standpoint. It hurt the franchise because a lot of people did not like the movie and are/will be skeptical to see a 4th or 5th movie due to the quality of the 3rd one . On the other side, if we look at TDK, it made lots of money and we'd love to see a sequel.

In a world that contains sequels to Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf, I don't know if there actually is such a thing as a movie bad enough to completely kill a franchise, if the original film was a low-budget cheese-fest to begin with. If the franchise is expensive, then sequels can kill it. See Fright Night II, Gremlins II (which I liked, one of the only people who liked that movie besides Joe Dante's mother, apparently), Ghostbusters II, Poltergesit II, Jaws IV, Robocop II and III, etc.

But if your film is no more expensive than film stock and labor, you get endless pap, usually in the horror and sci-fi genre.
