Default Star Trek TOS: 4:3 format: Good or Bad?

Some purists I'm sure will call me crazy, but I'm dissapointed that Star Trek TOS will not fill my Vizio screen. Is this going to affect anybody else's buying decision, or should I just change my way of thinking? I'm looking for responses from both sides. Thanks, guys!

It would be seriously cropped to the point of cutting off the tops of people's heads in some scenes. Do you really think you would enjoy that?

I have the Star Trek TOS on HD DVD and there is no way I would ever want to see it cropped.

Original Aspect Ratio should be gone with every time.

(Imagine Mommy Dearest's voice hollering):

No... Cropping... EVER!!!!!!

But I wouldn't mind if P-mount placed an appropriate animated graphic element in place of the black bars on the side -- the way Disney did with Pinocchio. I thought that was innovative and cool.

I can envision some blinking Enterprise computer control panels or perhaps those stars that streak by as the Enterprise travels at warp speeds filling the space where the black side bar will appear.

Which reminds me:

What does the Starship Enterprise have in common with a roll of toilet paper?

They both circle Uranus in search of Klingons.

What did Mr. Spock find when he looked in the toilet bowl?

The Captain's log.

Do you not understand that to fill your Vizio screen will mean cutting off the top and bottom of the full image to make it fit? Is that what you really want to sacrifice in order to have it fit your screen?

I pre-ordered mine at Amazon the week it was listed. I understand what I'm getting and prefer it in its original format rather than have the original image cut.

And if you want to suggest that Paramount go in and digitally add imagery to the sides, maybe in twenty years after they milk us for all this current version is worth on this version will that ever happen. If ever.

cropping anything = BAD

i have plenty of tv shows in 4:3 on dvd and it never bothers me. What would bother me is if these shows were hacked up to look like the zoom function on my tv

If someone wants their HD 3:4 material cropped to 16:9, let their TV handle it with the zoom function. Don't force it on everyone by hardcoding a 16:9 crop into it.

This is what that smart stretch feature is good for, but leave the movie as intended! I want Buffy in HD for example, don't give a damn if it stays 4:3.

Same here. The pq is gorgeous, people will not be disappointed.

As others said: Use the stretch-options of your displays, if the oar is a concern.

Tip:

Don't look at the black bars. Look at the pretty picture in between them.

That question has been answered enough, but to change the subject a little..
Will "The Cage " be part of this set? I haven't seen anything one way or the other on this.

Neither. Star Trek TOS in 4:3=EPIC!!! Seriously, why would we want something to be cropped just to fit on the TV? If I want widescreen Trek, I'll get the movies.

That's a good idea, like a crewmember slacking off and watching Star Trek. Very good idea.

Good advice ever since movies were presented in their OAR on VHS and DVD.
