Going clinically insane

I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me some much needed help.

Over the last few months I have been attempting to put together a media centre/blu ray player pc.

It is a bit of a long story but I started out by buying a sony BD drive, I installed power DVD and everything ran but the picture was really jumpy.

Then I upgraded my graphics card to an ati 3650 hd card. Although the 3600 series cards are on the BD advisors list when I run the advisor now it says my card is not compatible. Anyhow when I run power DVD now it all seems to run ok the quality seems fine but it kicks me out with an error (0111) about my hardware not being compatible (even though I can see it running fine).

So then I opted to get the Nero BD plugin. Which will not run because it reckons that direct draw is not enabled.

I have been into "dxdiag" and there is no option to allow me to enable direct draw.

I have now downloaded the trial of TMT3 which seems to run perfectly but to be honest after the amount of money I have spent already I am really reluctant to purchase another BD software player as I am getting to the point now where I mayaswell of purchased a standalone player.

Hope someone has some suggestions

I can't offer suggestions... I used HTPC from 1999 till maybe 2003 my my only experience with them was with trying to get the most from DVDs.

I would just say that for Blu Ray... PS3 makes a nice HTPC-esqe machine and you could then use the PC for everything else.

One possible suggestion is try WinDVD if there is a trial version. I always found WinDVD much more stable than PowerDVD back in the day but I don't know if that's still the case.

I still use WinDVD in a PC but not a version that does Blu Ray.

I re-read you post and you don't want to buy another software player.... Anyway,.. I think you should. PowerDVD was always buggy back in the days of my experience with it and I doubt that's changed.

Stand alone Blu Ray players can be close to $100 refurbished on Ebay... you may really look into that. I assume that the HTPC is going to be more than just a player though.

I think I would get a stand alone player or PS3 and use the PC for other things but that's just me.

I bought my projector from ElectroZone and I feared they were just a scammer shop but they sell boat loads of these refurbished Blu Ray players cheap and have nothing but positive feedback...

You might have a driver's problem. In the past, the ATi drivers used to randomly break the HDCP with some of their updates. It might work with one version, they bring out an update and then it's broken once more until they fix it ('hotfix' or completely new release).

I've mostly stopped using my htpc for BD playback, using hardware players now. But i have a 3650 card as well and this was one of the problems i had to deal with a few months ago.

I'd recommend creating images of your install (so you can go back to your original install without problems) and test different ATi driver versions.

I use Nvidia and TMT and I have no problems. When I added HDMI via my motherboard, my PC replaced my LG-200 Standalone (won its spot back). My Pc is my main BD player.
