Default Has Borders Gone Insane?

Received an email from Borders, in it there is a link that selected Blu-ray Disc are 20% off; here are some examples of their so called sale prices:

Forgetting Sarah Marshall $42.99; Wal-Mart $26.33
Burn After Reading $42.99; Amazon $25.99
Death Race $42.99; Amazon $26.99

Now not every movie is $42.99 Jarhead is $30.99 but then again Amazon has it for $14.49

And Borders management wonders why nobody shops retail anymore.

their movies are MSRP (just like barnes and noble). this is a common discussion. if you don't like the prices, don't shop there, simple as that

but don't be so quick to write them off. sometimes they host B2G1's that when combined with coupons (and especially if you are a member) can be great deals....

well correct term would be MSRP price but otherwise agreed unless you have like a 40% off coupon through their free membership

We all know that we don't have to shop there, that is a moot point. MSRP is set by the manufactor and not the retailer - so why is Borders and Barnes over MSRP? They are lying about MSRP. There is no single title disc BD with an MSRP of $42.99?

Amazon and Tower etc. list the MSRP for a single title for $39.99 and below and then they discount of that. Death Race has a MSRP of $39.98 everywhere else - so where does Borders get off saying it is $42.99.

I have never purchased nor have ever seen a remotely reasonable blu-ray
price at Borders----

but that doesn't mean that all "retail" pricing is bad-- other stores offer much better prices (Target, Best Buy, etc)

ultimately though it is no secret that Amazon and the like are the most consistant on "best deal" pricing

Well, if you thought $42.99 was high then sit down for this. Borders has Bolt on BD with a retail price of $45.99 when all others say the MSRP is $39.99.

Agreed, but retailer that do this just help reinforce the stereotype that blu-rays are just too darned expensive when compared to DVDs (though their DVDs are usually outrageously over priced as well).

kind of but not really. it's not like their dvds are sold at retail, they too are MSRP..

(i.e. the price gap at borders for bluray/dvd is similar to price gap for bluray/dvd at amazon)

The shame of it is (sort of) that there are suckers out there who buy their DVDs and BDs from these book stores and support this massive overpricing. If no one bought from there, they would be forced to ditch this section of their store or lower their hideous prices.

I believe it. They had WALL:E (2 disc) for $39.99 at mine. I always cruise the Blu section when I am there....strictly for entertainment.

I have never found a deal at Borders since it moved to my city. They are extremely overpriced. The only thing about them is that they have titles (maybe not Blu-ray yet because there isn't A LOT of indy films on the format yet) you can't find anywhere else; except online. Border's was the only store in my town that carried the Magnolia, Boogie Nights, The Darjeeling Limited and Bottle Rocket, etc DVDs 100% of the time. I might of got lucky and ran across one someone else maybe once. They are the only place I knew I could find them, but they all are atleast $26.99 +. Besides that highlight, Borders is a overpriced and crappy franchise I don't like giving my business too. Just shop online for those movies and never buy a BD there

Borders has increased their online prices as much as 20% above MSRP, while the stores remain MSRP. Some of them are REALLY nuts like Gandhi

MSRP- $28.99
Borders- $40.99

I have called corporate several times about it, and they won't comment, or claim no knowlege

Shop in-store and use the coupons

I've found that even with the coupons I get emailed, Borders is still higher than other B&M stores.

agreed on that, but if you have a coupon and use it on a B2G1 you can get some great deals. the awesome thing about borders and B&N B2G1s is that they generally include nearly ALL of the blurays, not just select ones like amazon. in the last one i got a lot of stuff on my wish list $46-$52 shipped per every 3

You're right the online coups dont help much anymore! Also the cheapest Blu I've ever seen in thier store was 19.99 But theres still hope,I remember they did come down on their DVD's drastically in the year 2000 or so when they finally came down in price when DVD's were the big hype, hopefully Blu Ray will get the same treatment in the future, they can do this, and get a boatload more customers!
