Default New...with audio question.

I've had my PS3 since Christmas and my Panasonic TV (model TH-42PX75U) for a year and a half now, and I haven't ever experienced a problem with audio until now.

(My apologies for the length...)

2 weeks ago, I bought "Bolt" on Blu-Ray (the 3 disc edition that has the Blu-Ray disc, a standard DVD and a Digital Copy); as soon as I put the Blu-Ray into my PS3, from the moment the previews come up to the menu and the film itself, I get perfect picture but no audio what so ever. I figured it was my PS3, so I unplugged it and reset it but to no avail. I tried putting in the standard DVD and everything worked perfectly, audio and video, just not the quality I paid for.

So I called Disney and they said it was most likely my PS3 not responding to the DTS-HD Master Audio codec that they use on their Blu-Ray discs; however, I've watched "Repo! The Genetic Opera" many times (it uses the same DTS-HD Master Audio codec) with no issues at all.

Anyway, I went ahead and took the discs back to BestBuy and swapped it out for another just like it. I get home, put it in...and same thing happens.

When I was on the phone with Disney's tech, he had me go through several audio codec options on my PS3, turning them off and on, and none of that worked. He basically said, "tough crap, brother" and sent me on my way.

I'm fresh out of ideas and have no clue what to do now...so if anyone may be able to help, I would greatly appreciate it.

As mentioned before, I have a Panasonic 42" TH-42PX75U plasma connected directly to a PS3 using an HDMI cable. I don't have a surround sound system or anything hooked up (once I can afford that, it's in the plan), so it's just Playstation straight to the TV.

Thanks again for any help.

How do you have it setup for sound on the PS3? Let's make sure that is setup correctly right now.

You should have HDMI selected for audio and set to bitstream if I'm not mistaken (you could probably do linear, but since your using tv speakers it shouldn't make a difference).

They other thing I would suggest trying is hook up the composite cable that originally came with your PS3 (the yellow, red, white cable). You can still use the HDMI for video but change the audio settings to output over composite. Since your just using your TV speakers the stereo sound (red, white) should be just fine. Hope that helps.

I was thinking the same, but I watched Bolt on another PS3 in my house that I just forget to update as frequently, so I think it is one or two updates behind the 2.80 that was released recently. I am going to say instead of bitstreaming via HDMI, set it to Linear PCM. If you have tried everything like you said, then this is one crazy issue

How are you sending the audio to your TV? Bitstreaming or PCM? I'm guessing your set can't decode DTS, so I'd recommend to send it out via PCM (I'm a little rusty, but I think you can do that via optical). You will get 2.0 lossless if you select DTS-HD MA, but that's all your TV can handle anyway.

You've got to let your PS3 do the decoding as most sets don't do much if anything in the way of decoding.

i was under the impression the ps3 could not bitstream master audio?

if REPO works and Bolt doesn't i would suggest a firmware check to make sure you are current? Thats what i would be led to believe, unless you were unlucky enough to get 2 bad discs.

It doesn't but, it wouldn't matter much since the OP doesn't have surround sound, he is using TV speakers

This is very strange. I'm no expert so not sure what to suggest. Are discs tested before they are sent to the stores? Maybe ask the store to check another copy of their stock of Bolt on one of their players. Could the whole batch be faulty? Have you tried it on a friend's player?

It can't. His TV can't handle it either. My point is that he'll get DTS 2.0 that way. His TV can't decode that stuff, and can only output 2.0 anyway.

I did not have any problem with Bolt on my system (PS3 to receiver to TV). I have not done any firmware updates for about 2 months. If one movie using DTS MA works they should all work. I'm sorry I could not have been more help.

LOL, you should know better than the bolded statement. Take a look at about any new title and folks that've been working fine all along decoding said format will have issues until a firmware update. PS3 is pretty unflappable though- I honestly see it having far fewer issues than anything else.

Thanks so much for the help and advice.

I have set it up to run both Linear PCM as well as Bitstream, and neither output mode works.

However, I have only run it through HDMI (two different cables, just to make sure one wasn't bad), so I will try to run it through the composite cable and see if that works.

I was under the impression that 2.70, not 2.80, was the most recent firmware update, and if that is correct then yes, I have been current ever since purchasing the disc, and even before that.

I have not tried it on a friend's player as of yet, was going to test that this weekend.

Yeah, the whole thing is confusing. I'm not sure why Bolt won't work, but Repo! works beautifully...they're both DTS-HD MA.

Thanks for helping, I appreciate everyone lending their time and expertise.
