If you plan to put it in the wall, I would recommend using the appropriate wire.

Inwall wires are needed. Even if they're speaker wire or hdmi cables.

Go with in-wall wires don't take a chance using normal wires. I don't have an in-wall setup but I still use the wires for they are better protected from the elements. And honestly they aren't that much more to begin with well based of monoprice.com that is.

I think Brain Sturgeon or Big Daddy mentioned that if there was a fire caused by non in wall wires, insurance won't cover it. At that point, it is very much worth your time and money to buy the appropriate wires.

CL2 wire is wire certified for in-wall use. I bought 16g speaker wire that's CL2 and I didn't use it in-wall. The white "coating" was easy to paint over and easy to hide. I do have my center wire and the hdmi cables going from the back of my LCD and to and from my receiver behind my drywall and they are CL2 wires. I picked up the flat monoprice hdmi cables and they're CL2 as well.

it also depends on your living conditions.

do you own or rent? if its any consolation, a number of members cannot do in wall due to these constraints, but others have cleverly addressed this with neat and proper wiring.

for in wall installs, i do prefer you do it using the CL2 rated wires. heck your doing it once, might as well do it right.

oh dont forget to add some slack on it too. ive learned that when we've done installs and shaved a tad more than we want just to 'save' up on them. big mistake.

heres the thing...

im not technically going behind the wall. im going above drop ceiling. i guess that would be considered in wall though?? im going to use some type of wire management to try to hide the wires from my receiver up to the ceiling outside the wall and then go above the drop ceiling to the back wall. still need CL2, correct?

Bottom line...you can't see the wire. Therefore, you need to protect yourself with in-wall rated wire even tho it's only being covered by a drop ceiling.

It's the prudent, proper way. And it won't really cost much more.

Even above a drop ceiling you must use CL2 wire at a minimum. Right now I'm wiring a commercial building and all the low voltage wire is CMR (CL3R). CL2 is the bare minimum requirement by the NEC.
