Angry Fox Cuts Dollhouse

Oh wow, this is shocking, another show I like gets cut short. Kings yesterday, Dollhouse today probably Chuck and Life tomorrow. Just another check in the box to cancel my dish and keep the tv set on DVD from now on. Seriously it was cut for Prison Break? the show that has been beating that bloody broken dead horse for 3 years now? Wow, thanks for bringing me more Prison Break, my dream has come true.

Uh-oh… more bad news for fans of Dollhouse. Fox e-mailed out the highlights from its upcoming May schedule, and one thing appears to be missing: the final episode of Joss Whedon's new action show.

On May 8, Fox will air the episode titled "Omega," which the network describes as a season finale. But there's just one problem: "Omega" is only the show's 12th episode and the crew shot 13. The episode that won't air is titled "Epitaph One."

The news appears to have been confirmed with Felicia Day, who starred in Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and had a role in "Epitaph One." According to The Hollywood Reporter, Day used her Twitter account to say, "Man, day getting worse and worse. Found out my Dollhouse ep, #13 isn't gonna air. Only on DVD. Such a great part too. Thx Fox. ..."

However, according to some from Whedon's camp, "Omega" is actually Whedon's original idea of a season finale, so season one won't feel cut short. But the obvious question is "if that was the season finale, why did they shoot an extra episode?"

It looks as though Fox cut Dollhouse's run short in order to make room for the two-hour Prison Break series finale.

This should in no way be interpreted as the show being cancelled, but it isn't a good sign either.

UPDATE: According to television critic Alan Sepinwall, Fox apparently considers the original pilot (Joss Whedon re-shot the first episode) as part of the 13-episode order, and "Epitaph One" was produced independently by the studio. Therefore, Fox doesn't feel as though they need to air the extra episode (and if that's the case, it's a legitimate decision). It is believed the unaired episode will be part of the season one DVD box set.

Felicia Day rocks. I was looking forward to her episode despite not watching the show for a long time.

Dollhouse is not cancelled...yet

Apparently they're even leaning toward renewal and a new timeslot. If nothing else, the major franchise Firefly has proven to be for a midseason cancellation is probably giving them pause.

Tim Minear put this up on Whedonesque

Quote:
Okay. So maybe I can help clarify this somewhat. Because we scrapped the original pilot -- and in fact cannibalized some of its parts for other eps -- we really ended up with 12 episodes. But the studio makes DVD and other deals based on the original 13 number. So we created a standalone kind of coda episode. Which is the mythical new episode 13. The network had already paid for 13 episodes, and this included the one they agreed to let us scrap for parts. It does not include the one we made to bring the number back up to 13 for the studio side and its obligations. We always knew it would be for the DVD for sure, but we also think Fox should air it because it’s awesome
Let us pray

Is this really that surprising to anyone?

I mean, I don't watch a Fox show until its finished at least its first season. The only time I've broken that rule was for Sarah Connor Chronicles due to the fact that a co-worker gave his word it was good. Which it was...

Anyway, its a shame this is getting canned as I've heard a lot of buzz about this show and all of it has been good.

Dollhouse was not my cup of tea. Its alright, if I have room on the DVR and it looks interesting, I will record it while I am at work. But you are right, Fox does all to often kill shows that are worth watching.

Right now, Terminator is on the fence. TV says season finale, but the show is good so you know what that means....
Prison break, I am a bit mad about, but its gone on longer then planned. Just as long as fox ends the series right, then it will be all good.

If house gets the ax, well then

Not really. I don't watch it and I had a feeling they would cut it before it even started lol. With some shows you just know.

Sorry fans.

I think this show was really starting to develop into something good. Fox did not want it to succeed by dumping it on Friday night with another ratings doormat in Terminator:SCC. Maybe it will come back as a half-season pickup.

Someone please explain to me why Prison Break still has fans who think this is the best show on tv? It is the most predictable formulaic garbage i've seen in a long long time. Oh no the bad guy is mom, now what do we do?

Who doesn't stay at home and watch TV on a friday night?

Socializing past your computer community at home is so overrated.

Anyway, I think that 90% of the people who watches TV shows that air on Friday/Saturday own a DVR.

Terminator actually isn't a ratings doormat

The problem is that like Dollhouse it appeals to the DVR generation, people who watch virtually nothing live (which means they don't watch ads)

They track about 3 million officially, when in reality it's 8-10 million.

Frankly I think that networks need to start cutting deals with the cable companies to trade a Hulu style ad scheme for free or reduced DVR costs. They can demographically target the ads and charge more for them, and make more money per user.

How many people who DVR would mind watching 5 unskippable 30sec ads spread out in exchange for waiving DVR fees?

PS- I like Prison Break's ludicrousness, best show on TV? Hardly. Worth watching? Totally :P The first season, filler episodes aside is a great show

My solution all along have been for advertisers to just have commericals that display a single image with everything they need to express to sell their 'product'.

I'd be one of the people to jump on the 'free DVR' bandwagon in exchange for limited commericals. For example, Fringe has limited commerical interruption therefore I'm almost forced to either slow fast forward through the commerical or just suck it up and watch it.
