Default Earthsea vs. Tales from Earthsea

I haven't read the books and don't care how faithful the adaptation is and I loved Earthsea. Any chance this will release on blu-ray? Some fans are complaining that some racial theme of the story was taken out and how with the exception of one main black character, everyone else is white in the movie. They mention the books had blacks, whites and Asians. I think they don't realize that Kristin Kreuk who plays the costarring role is half Chinese.

Anyway, I just found out there's been another movie based on Earthsea called Tales from Earthsea. It looks like an anime. Has anyone seen this other movie? It's not listed on netflix and amazon only sells it in their marketplace. Better or worse than the SyFy/Hallmark one?

One was made by the Sci-Fi Channel, and one was made by the studio that gave us "Spirited Away".

....

...Would you like another sentence, or will that do it?

Thanks Spirited Away is one of the few anime films I actually enjoyed. I am trying very hard to like anime and I feel I should like it since people I know like it and it seems so artsy and cool to like it

I'll have to see if any place has this to rent.

Let's hope you're overseas, as the Sci-Fi (no, I won't call it "SyFy") version has Ghibli's version blocked on rights issues. It hasn't shown up here yet.

(And if you're "trying hard" to like anime, I'm guessing you're still in the Theatrical Ghetto, where you think anime only exists in Sony arthouse imports--Hence the symptomatic interest in Ghibli titles, and comfort in Spirited as "the good one you liked".
Not that there's anything wrong with that--apart from the fact that Miyazaki didn't direct "Tales", his son did--otherwise, yep, that would qualify as "trying hard"...But fortunately there is help, as the topic, treatment, and therapy has been discussed on the board frequently in the past:

Are you talking about Spirited Away? I didn't see it on the Syfy channel. I saw it on DVD a long time ago. I'm in the U.S. and I didn't know the U.S. version is very different. Thanks for the links.

Er, no, the anime "Tales from Earthsea" is blocked from the US because that poopie cable miniseries version still holds exclusive movie rights to the book in North America.

don't bother with 'Tales from Earthsea' it's Studio Ghibli's worst film IMO. Disney was supposed to release it, but seeing how utterly terrible it is, they have a stinker on their hands.

To each his own, I found it to be a really good movie. Better than some of Hayao's movies IMO. I find it silly that people tend to complain on it mainly because it doesn't feel like a Hayao Miyazaki movie, which is really unfair, since that clearly isn't what Goro was trying to accomplish. It should be judged on its own merits.

^ all I'm saying it looked 'cheap' and was nowhere as good as the book.
